Students from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, recently united with peers from 22 other schools at the International Centre in remembrance of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda. The event was a solemn occasion aimed at honouring the memory of the victims and educating present and future generations about the harrowing events that unfolded.

The gathering provided a comprehensive historical overview, delving into the complex political, social, and economic factors that culminated in the genocide. Exhibits and presentations vividly depicted the extremist ideologies, such as the “Ten Commandments of the Hutus,” which incited hatred and violence against the Tutsi minority, igniting one of the darkest chapters in human history.

Commencing with a poignant moment of silence, the event progressed with a heartfelt message from the UN
Secretary-General, emphasising the imperative of learning from past atrocities to prevent their recurrence. Students showcased their talents through thought-provoking artworks, skits, and musical performances, fostering dialogue and introspection among attendees.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the day was a profoundly moving speech by the Rwandan High Commissioner, who courageously shared personal experiences as a genocide survivor, offering poignant insights into the resilience and strength of the Rwandan people in the face of unimaginable adversity.

In conclusion, the commemoration at the International Centre served as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of humanity. It served as a solemn reflection on the past, but more importantly, it ignited a call to action for the future. It underscored the transformative power of education and remembrance in cultivating empathy, compassion, and solidarity, ensuring that the lessons learned from Rwanda’s tragic history are never forgotten.
