Nidhi Batra, a science teacher in Delhi Government School chose Apeejay School, Faridabad, for daughter Deetya to provide her a “comfortable and secure environment”. In an interview, the mother talks about how the school has helped Deetya, who is in class 7 now, become more self-reliant. Edited excerpts:

What made you choose Apeejay School, Faridabad?

I am also an alumna of the same school. When we were looking for schools for our daughter, Apeejay School, Faridabad, turned out to be the best option. I wanted Deetya to have the same comfort that I experienced in school. I can confidently say that our decision was correct because Apeejay provides a comfortable and secure environment for children. The teachers make them feel comfortable—it is a home away from home.

How would you compare your experience in school with that of your daughter?

The school has adopted a child-centered approach. They tweak their approach to suit the needs of children. Besides, there is a lot more emphasis on co-curricular activities. For instance, my daughter is interested in sports, and she participates in various kinds of games like basketball, badminton, cricket, etc. Prior to the pandemic, she participated in various inter-school competitions as well.

Would you say that the environment at Apeejay promotes holistic development?

Yes, not only academics but the school also shapes a child’s overall personality. It is ensured that the students remain grounded, and they value their traditions and culture. Deetya has also become more self-reliant. Online classes in the pandemic have made her more technologically advanced. Since we are working parents, our daughter managed her assignments and classes on her own, thanks to the teachers’ guidance.

Do the teachers give personal attention to students?

Yes, the teachers are giving their 200 per cent! They are available throughout the day for the students. Whatever issues that a child might be facing are resolved at the earliest. The teachers make it a point to get each and every student to participate in activities. And each time, it is a new activity that they are made to perform so that the students eventually are able to identify their interests.

Is Deetya comfortable with the curriculum?

Deetya does not feel any burden. She finds enough time for each and every activity besides studying. We go out together, attend family functions; she also gets time to play in the evening. Exams are like a revision for Deetya. The teachers prepare them well for the final exams through practice tests. In fact, the number of assignments has increased in the pandemic.

As working parents, how do you stay updated with all the developments in school?

Sometimes, we are not able to physically attend parent-teacher meetings. So, the teachers share their feedback through messages or WhatsApp. Deetya has also developed the habit of sharing updates once we return home from work.
