Students from the Fashion and Interior Design Departments embarked on an enlightening academic excursion to The Kunj at Vasant Kunj. Known as a vibrant centre for the fusion of art, craft, and sustainable design, The Kunj offered students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment where creativity meets conscious innovation. The visit served as a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, providing a deeper understanding of India’s evolving design landscape.

The Kunj is widely celebrated as a space for experiential learning through observation, workshops, demonstrations, and conversations. Students were exposed to the intricate craft traditions of India while witnessing how artisans and designers reinterpret age-old practices for modern needs. This real-time engagement allowed them to appreciate the delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing new-age design philosophies.

Throughout the visit, students interacted closely with designers, artisans, and creative professionals who shared insights into their artistic processes. These conversations highlighted the growing relevance of sustainability, ethical material sourcing, and environmentally responsible production techniques in both fashion and interior design sectors. Students learned how eco-friendly materials, waste-reducing practices, and mindful design approaches can significantly influence the future of the industry.

One of the key takeaways was understanding how tradition and innovation can coexist harmoniously. From observing textile techniques to exploring handcrafted interior elements and sustainable décor solutions, students gained a nuanced perspective of how cultural narratives can be preserved while adapting to global design trends. The fusion of past and present, and the blend of Indian sensibilities with global influences, became evident through the diverse exhibits and live demonstrations at The Kunj.

The exposure also enhanced the students’ appreciation of design aesthetics and practical application. They observed innovative methods used in crafting garments, accessories, furniture, and interior installations, discovering how functionality, materiality, and creativity shape the overall design experience. Many students noted that the visit sparked fresh ideas and encouraged them to integrate sustainable concepts into their academic projects and future professional work.

By engaging with real-world practices and listening to artisans’ stories, students developed a more grounded and holistic understanding of the design ecosystem. The experience reinforced the importance of responsible design thinking and inspired them to explore new creative directions.

Overall, the visit to The Kunj proved to be an enriching and transformative learning experience. It broadened the students’ artistic outlook, deepened their appreciation for sustainable craftsmanship, and strengthened their commitment to designing with purpose.
