The corridors of Apeejay School, Tanda Road were infused with the low hum of giggles peppered by the tinkling of spices brewing and blending, setting the mood high for one of the many food stalls buzzing with yet another electrifying and fun-filled session.
In this activity, the Home Science department came up with an innovative hands-on practice in which students prepared one of the most inviting street foods across the country — pani puri. The classes cooked up a storm of tangy and spicy flavours; cooking classes were not all about cooking alone but learning through fun and activity, imparters of the essence of healthy dieting.
This snack is much more than just a treat that tickles one’s taste buds; basically, it is an extensive source of phosphorus. This is one of the essential nutrients in the human body and of key importance to the health of bones. The students were fully briefed on the nutritional values of the items used and came to learn that even the most unlikely of snacks, considered essentially as a street food delicacy, could be both wholesome and nourishing.
The preparation was also an event in itself. Students mixed, rolled, and fried those puris themselves under the guidance of teachers, while more creative students went ahead and concocted that very spicy tamarind water, famed for its digestive qualities. This thus manifested in developing culinary skills hand-in-hand with learning the practical aspect of food science and nutritional education.

Engagement and enthusiasm among students
It was palpable in the eagerness with which participants took turns preparing and assembling the pani-puris. This interactive session was also used as a forum to discuss food preferences, cultural food practices, and what goes on behind the science that is everyday cooking. The experience was fulfilling since the meeting of the tastes and knowledge had left the participants full and informed.

Takeaways from the day
The event wasn’t only a pani-puris eating exercise but one for the realisation of the value of ingredients and their worth and benefits. Workshop participants walked out, not just having appreciated the home-cooked meal better, but in possession of skills to choose healthy food.
The event recently conducted at Apeejay School, Tanda Road, is just a testament to the fact that this school doles out many such enjoyable and insightful experiences to children. It gave an apt example of how learning in an academic institution can be amalgamated creatively with life skills so that education doesn’t stay in books and classrooms.
