This class 6 student creates magic out of clay

As children, we have played and made different shapes out of clay. But to create sculptures out of clay that look the exact replica of an animal in reality is not just art but also magic. Vanya Sharma, class 6 student at Apeejay School, Noida has just done that. She bagged the first prize in the inter-school clay modelling competition. In an exclusive interview, the budding clay artist gives us an insight into the art of clay modelling and her experience from the competition. Edited excerpts:

Tell us about your experience in the competition?

There were around 17 participants, all from different schools. We were given 2 hours to create a sculpture using clay. Creating a sculpture involves learning some basic techniques, using some specific materials and tools. One must have the knowledge of how the clay reacts to being shaped, that is a must. The better we understand these basics, the more easily we can handle the clay and create a sculpture. One of the fun things about learning to sculpt is when we achieve a variety of different effects and textures  on the clay using the tools. The competition was a great learning experience for me to practice my craft.  

What was your sculpture about?

I made a Rooster. It was of terracotta colour. We had to carry our own material in the competition and so, I carried terracotta coloured clay. I practiced making this sculpture several times in school with my art teacher Nandita ma’am. We even practiced on some during the holidays as well. It involved a lot of dedication, effort and commitment and so it was a great learning process for me

Since when did you start practicing clay modelling?

It was recently that I got introduced to it. The first time I made a clay model was in class 6, as a part of my class activity in the art period at school. Nandita ma’am checked the texture and design of my work and she was very impressed back then. That is why she selected me for this competition.

Have you always been good at art?

Yes. I really enjoy art. I was never introduced to sculpture before, but now I am passionate about this art form. I practice it whenever I get free time.

What is your next artwork?

I want to learn a lot of different artworks. I want to learn how to make a peacock sculpture or a flower garland with clay.

How did your school help you to win this competition?

Firstly, I would like to thank my teacher Nandita ma’am. It is solely due to her guidance and support that I was able to win the competition. Nandita ma’am took me to the Vice-Principal ma’am’s office straightaway as I returned to school having won the competition. The Vice-Principal appreciated me a lot, she even hugged me. I was very happy at that moment. My friends also appreciated me a lot. I was really happy.
