Beyond the chessboard 

The Chess Club at Apeejay School, Saket, provided students with an engaging platform to develop strategic thinking, concentration, and decision-making skills through the timeless game of chess. Guided by a professional chess trainer, the young enthusiasts participated in regular practice sessions designed to strengthen their understanding of the game while encouraging them to think several moves ahead.

The sessions went beyond learning the rules and techniques of chess. Students were encouraged to analyse different positions on the board, identify possible moves, anticipate their opponent’s strategies and make thoughtful decisions. Each game presented a new challenge, requiring them to remain focused, patient and adaptable throughout the match.

Through hands-on practice and guided learning, students explored the importance of planning before making a move. They learnt that every decision on the chessboard can influence the outcome of a game, helping them understand the value of logical reasoning, careful observation and calculated risk-taking.

The club also contributed to the development of several important life skills. Chess encouraged critical and logical thinking as students assessed situations and worked towards effective solutions. It strengthened concentration and focus, while strategic gameplay helped them enhance their problem-solving and planning abilities. The process of waiting for the right opportunity and responding thoughtfully also fostered patience and perseverance.

Furthermore, making independent decisions during games helped students build confidence and develop a greater sense of responsibility for their choices. Winning a game brought a sense of accomplishment, while challenging positions and losses offered valuable opportunities to reflect, learn, and improve.

The Chess Club thus served as more than a recreational activity. It became a space where students could challenge themselves, learn from every move, and gradually become sharper, more confident thinkers.

With every game, the young players are learning to think, plan, play, and grow, carrying the lessons of the chessboard beyond the club and into their everyday lives.
