Young learners create pen stands from waste in hands-on sustainability activity

An inspiring blend of creativity & environmental awareness activity at Apeejay School, Model Town

Apeejay School, Model Town recently turned its classrooms into hubs of creativity and eco-conscious innovation as students of Grade 3 participated in a vibrant “Best Out of Waste” activity. The initiative, part of their Environmental Studies (EVS) lesson on waste disposal, aimed to instill sustainable thinking in young minds through hands-on learning.

The theme was simple yet powerful: transform household waste into something useful. And the students did just that by making colourful, imaginative pen stands out of discarded materials like old cartons, newspaper rolls, cardboard tubes, ice-cream sticks, bottle caps, fabric scraps, and more.

Learning the 4 R’s in Action

This engaging activity brought the four pillars of sustainability (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) to life in the most practical way. As they cut, glued, assembled, and decorated their pen stands, the children internalised valuable lessons about resource conservation and waste management.

The goal wasn’t just to create a pretty product, but to encourage children to view waste differently as something that holds potential, not just disposal value. Their imaginative creations were as thoughtful as they were artistic.

A Creative and Educational Experience

The classrooms buzzed with excitement and laughter as students shared ideas and helped one another. Teachers guided them gently, but allowed the children the space to think, explore, and innovate independently.

Each student proudly held up their finished creation, showcasing their understanding and originality. The variety in design, colours, and materials used spoke volumes about their inventiveness.

Building Habits for a Sustainable Future

Activities like these are more than just classroom exercises; they are building blocks of responsible citizenship. When children engage with real-world challenges through creative projects, they develop problem-solving skills, empathy for the environment, and a sense of ownership in creating a greener tomorrow.

By turning “waste” into something useful and beautiful, the students of Apeejay School, Model Town showcased the core idea that “Nothing is waste until we waste it.” The pen stands now serve as daily reminders of their learning, proudly sitting on their desks.
