Almost all of us have seen the movie ET (1982) or the series X Files. Our fascination with ‘aliens’ dates back centuries and is embedded in our DNA. The fact that maybe we are not alone is thrilling and a bit scary. In the world of the unknown, Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) have taken root in the psyche. From there stems the celebration of World UFO Day, on July 2 (an annual affair) that has captured the interest of many enthusiastic globally! This very day is remembered to commemorate the supposed UFO crash of the Roswell UFO incident in 1947.

From whispered conspiracies to the flickering lights in the night sky, World UFO Day beckons us to peer beyond the mundane, inviting us to embrace the mysteries that soar beyond our understanding. Did you know that the title UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) was created in 1953 by the US Air Force to record and review any instances where a flying object was logged in official reporting? Let’s explore some more interesting facts.
The day is broadly celebrated to inculcate unity across cultures and continents, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in exploring the mysteries of the universe.
There are plenty of educational institutes and schools in India that believe in celebrating World UFO Day to spark interest in STEM fields, particularly astronomy and space exploration, encouraging students to delve into scientific inquiry and critical thinking.
UFO Day has inspired not just one but great artistic expressions. This involves literature, music, films, and art, reflecting its impact on popular culture and the human psyche’s fascination with the unknown.
According to urban legends, Men in Black (MIB) are individuals who are said to be highly mysterious and they allegedly visit UFO witnesses to intimidate or silence them, fueling conspiracy theories about government cover-ups.
There are various locations abroad like Area 51 in Nevada, US, and the Hessdalen Valley in Norway, which are reputed to be UFO hotspots, where numerous sightings and unexplained phenomena occur.
A few theorists propose that ancient civilisations like the Egyptians or Mayans were visited by extraterrestrial beings who influenced their technological advancements and cultural development.

As per reports of unusual animal mutilations, where livestock or wildlife are found with precise surgical cuts and organs removed, have been linked by some to UFO activity or secret government experiments.
various fringe theories suggest that UFOs could be vehicles not just from other planets but from future civilizations or alternate dimensions, adding layers of complexity to the phenomenon.
“The mysterious world of UFOs is intriguing and fuels the curiosity quotient. They are the unknown presence that appears and disappears in our sky, becoming visible to some humans and in some parts of the world. They are fast-moving, technically super-advanced space-crafts apparently from outer space/ another galaxy,” says Ms Pinky B Mathur, PGT Biology, Apeejay School, Noida.
UFOs are the answers to our very often asked question ‘Are we alone?’ in this vast expanse of the universe. If real, they may be experimental vehicles with an interest in the human race and its existence on Earth. A lot of investigations have been conducted to ascertain the truth behind these sightings.
“The most fascinating aspect is their association with extra-terrestrial life (ET), which we believe exists. The presence of ‘aliens’ and their interactions with earthly beings are all debatable facts. Though human research has enough proof of their existence and the reasons for such visits/sightings yet there is nothing official about them. Maybe it is a well-guarded secret, hidden from the common man, only Time will unfold the tale,” added Ms Mathur.

Kenneth Arnold, 1947: Back in June 1947, civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold became a pivotal figure in the history of UFOs when he reported seeing nine blue, glowing objects near Mount Rainier, Washington. He described them as moving at incredible speeds of around 1,700 miles per hour in a V formation. Despite various reports supporting his sighting, the government never provided a definitive explanation, leaving the incident steeped in mystery.
Roswell, 1947: Yet another sighting from 1947, when the infamous Roswell incident took place. This is one of the most enduring UFO mysteries, as Rancher William Roswell discovered mysterious debris in a New Mexico pasture and reported it to military officials. Initially identified as a downed weather balloon, speculation persists to this day about the true nature of the recovered materials.

Rendlesham Forest, 1980: Personnel stationed at the US Air Force bases of Woodbridge and Bentwaters, near Rendlesham Forest in England, reported witnessing strange, colorful lights hovering above the forest. An eyewitness claimed to have seen a spacecraft, and subsequent investigations noted damage to trees and high levels of radiation at the site. Despite this, UK Ministry officials downplayed any credible threat to national security, halting further inquiry.
India, 2007: In Kolkata, India, reports emerged of a bizarre sighting between 3:30 am and 6:30 am. Witnesses allegedly filmed a mysterious object that morphed from a sphere to a triangle and then into a straight line. The incident sparked local intrigue and discussion but left authorities and experts baffled by its unconventional behavior and shape-shifting nature.
