Building blocks and handprints make learning meaningful
Learners at Apeejay School, Tanda Road, explore numbers and animal homes; turn lessons into creative experiences
Learning through play helps young children understand new ideas while remaining actively involved in the process. At Apeejay School, Tanda Road, Jalandhar, two classroom activities gave LKG and UKG learners opportunities to explore numbers and animal homes through practical tasks.
The activities combined learning with movement, creativity and the use of familiar materials. While UKG learners worked with number names and building blocks, LKG learners explored where animals live through hand printing and colouring. Each activity focused on a different concept, but both allowed children to learn by doing.
Numbers become a playful experience
For the SEA UKG Numeracy activity, the young learners picked slips and read the numbers written on them. They then spelt the corresponding number names before selecting and arranging building blocks according to each number.
The activity turned number learning into an enjoyable classroom experience. Reading and spelling helped strengthen number recognition and vocabulary. Using the blocks also encouraged learners to count carefully while working with their hands.
The play-based approach supported counting and fine motor skills at the same time. It allowed the children to connect written number names with actual quantities, making the lesson easier to understand and remember.
Exploring animal homes through art
The LKG learners took part in a hands-on activity centred on animal homes. They learnt that a dog lives in a kennel and explored the idea through a simple creative exercise.
The children made dogs using hand printing and then coloured their kennels. The task brought together the concept of animal homes with art, helping the learners remain engaged as they worked.
Besides introducing the children to a dog’s home, the activity encouraged creativity and imagination. Hand printing and colouring also supported fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Together, the two activities showed how play, art and practical materials can make classroom learning enjoyable.
