‘Explore, discover, and express define my design identity’

Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) is a truly inspiring place to be, shares a GDP-V student of the institute. “It offers a positive and welcoming environment that encourages students to learn and grow. The faculty members are interactive, approachable, and always willing to help. The facilities are also very good,” Linysha Singh (batch 2024) at the institute shared in an impromptu interview.

How has the programme helped you develop your creative style and design sensibility?

The programme has helped me immensely, and I genuinely enjoyed being a part of it. Our classes were not always confined to the classroom. We often stepped outside to explore, observe, and learn. Studying design also helped me discover many things about myself, which I consider one of my greatest achievements as a creative student.

Which project or assignment has challenged you the most, and what did you learn from it?

I worked on several projects and faced many challenges, but I managed to overcome each one. In one project, we had to represent a particular theme through alphabets. I chose festivals as my theme. Translating the idea into a design was difficult, but drawing inspiration from different sources helped me complete it successfully.

Which aspects of Fashion Design interest you most?

Within Fashion Design, I am particularly interested in illustration and garment construction, especially draping, which I am currently learning.

How have the faculty members and practical learning opportunities supported your growth?

The faculty members at AID have always been encouraging, approachable, and supportive. They introduced us to practical learning, which helped us understand how things work and what we are expected to consider while designing.

What kind of work or career would you like to pursue?

I would first like to gain professional experience by working for some time. Eventually, I hope to build something of my own.

How has studying Fashion Design changed the way you observe trends, fabrics, and everyday clothing?

Earlier, I was not very familiar with the different concepts involved in fashion. Now, I understand which fabrics are suitable for particular garments, how to dress according to the season, how to pair different pieces, and how to create patterns for various garments.

If you had to describe your design identity in three words, what would they be and why?

I would describe my design identity in three words: Explore, discover, and express.
