Why every student should participate in national quizzes

From boosting confidence to developing life skills, quiz competitions are shaping tomorrow’s leaders

In an age where academic excellence alone no longer defines success, national quiz competitions have emerged as powerful tools to encourage holistic student development. These intellectually stimulating events go beyond textbooks, promoting critical thinking, quick recall, and real-world application of knowledge.

Whether online or offline, subject-specific or general, national quizzes test more than just memory – they assess mental agility, problem-solving skills, and confidence under pressure.

“It really challenged me to think on my feet,” says Isba Naaz, a Class IX student at Apeejay School, Saket, who recently emerged as a winner in a Delhi-level Environment Quiz. “One round had open-ended questions, and I could actually share my own opinions. It made me feel heard and respected as a student.”

Building confidence through competition

Quiz contests provide a structured opportunity for students to engage in healthy competition. Standing on stage – or even a virtual platform – requires presence of mind, poise, and communication skills.

For introverted or academically inclined students, quizzes are often a more comfortable space to shine.

“I used to be nervous about speaking up,” Isba adds. “But through quizzes, I gained confidence. Now I feel ready to speak at debates or lead projects.”

A gateway to awareness and responsibility

National quizzes are often aligned with themes such as climate change, technology, current affairs, or history. This not only enhances general awareness but also sparks social responsibility.

The quiz that Isba participated in was organised on World Environment Day by the 3R Zerowaste Environment Foundation, with questions focused on sustainable development and eco-consciousness.

Benefits beyond academics

Engaging in quizzes offers long-term academic and personal benefits:

Improved memory and cognitive skills

Enhanced communication and teamwork

Better performance in competitive exams

A more curious, self-driven learning mindset

Many schools now integrate quiz-based learning as part of co-curricular development, recognising that such experiences contribute to overall personality growth.

Encouraging every child to participate

While only a few may win top prizes, every participant takes away something valuable – be it knowledge, exposure, or motivation to explore new ideas.

Educators and parents can support students by encouraging quiz participation from an early age and celebrating effort over just outcomes.

“Even if you don’t win, you gain so much,” Isba reflects. “Each quiz makes you a little smarter and more aware.”
