Harshita DasDo you yearn for a respite from the chaos of daily life? And in such a scenario, would you consider a mountain retreat? Do mountains make you feel alive? For many, a trip to the mountains is an experience that offers unparalleled beauty and diverse adventures. It gives them an overwhelming sense of freedom and simplicity. Irrespective of the season, many travel to the hills searching for quietness and tranquility. The majestic mountains provide a new experience every time one visits it. So undoubtedly, spending time in the lapse of these natural beauties is incomparable.
Moreover, mountains are not just scenic landscapes; they are invaluable natural treasures that host 15% of the world’s population and harbour approximately half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, mountains play a crucial role by providing freshwater to half of humanity, supporting agriculture, and serving as a source of clean energy and medicines.
Unfortunately, despite their significance, mountains have been facing unprecedented challenges. Climate change, overexploitation, and contamination have been posing severe threats to both people and the planet. Shockingly, over 311 million rural mountain dwellers in developing countries live in areas exposed to progressive land degradation, with 178 million facing vulnerability to food insecurity. The predicament of mountain ecosystems is a global concern that necessitates collective action. Mitigating our carbon footprint is imperative to preserving these natural wonders.
Thus, this International Mountain Day themed “Restoring mountain ecosystems”, provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of these ecosystems. And therefore on this special day, let’s hear what does going to the hills mean to these nature and mountain lovers:
Anubhuti Dixit, an MA student at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram
“A day in the mountains is a rejuvenating escape from the hustle of daily life. The crisp mountain air invigorates my senses, and the towering peaks remind me of nature’s grandeur. Each step on the trail feels like a journey toward tranquility, away from the chaos. The majestic landscapes inspire awe, teaching humility in the face of vast beauty. Whether it’s the panoramic views from a summit or the sound of a babbling mountain stream, every moment is a celebration of simplicity and serenity. A day dedicated to mountains means finding solace, recharging my spirit, and connecting with the timeless wonders of the natural world.”
Soniya Agrawal, student at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication Dwarka, Delhi
“For me, a trip to the mountain means going close to nature. The peace mountains offer leads to the ultimate bliss; it helps in self-exploration and better understanding of old as well new perspectives.”
Sumit Pandey, student at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram
My trip to the mountains has always been an amazing adventure teaching me valuable lessons. The journey through trees, valleys, and risky pathways is like a metaphor for life’s challenges, making me realise my own strength and adaptability. It has also helped me to develop the versatility character in me. The mountains aren’t just a physical climb but a journey into my own thoughts. Nature, with its simplicity, has shown me that true happiness comes from within and the beauty around us, not from material things. My mountain experiences have transformed my way of thinking, making me more flexible and appreciative of life’s genuine joys. Mountains have become a source of wisdom, echoing my own resilience and the happiness that exists in simplicity.”
Aniruddha Jahagirdar, an alumnus of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication Dwarka, Delhi
“Evenafter increasing pollution and pandemic crisis, today a man is alive because of nature in which mountains play the lead role. A day dedicated to mountains is a day dedicated to peace of mind. Being a Mumbaikar, I visit nearby hill stations and mountain areas so frequently, which help me in cleansing my mind after a tight five days office schedule. The continuous flow of wind always makes me love nature.”
In fact, in addition to the serenity and calmness, mountains do provide numerous health benefits. Physical activity in the mountains can have great benefits for cardiovascular health. It isn’t a secret that the air in the hills is much fresher and cleaner as compared to cities and towns. So are you wondering about a trip to the mountains? You must go take a break from the hustle-bustle of life!
