What is Patriotism?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, it means “Love of your country.” However, I believe it is much more than that. Patriotism is a word that holds deep meaning, devotion, and emotion. The concept of patriotism can vary for each individual. For some, it may involve following the Constitution of their country, for others, it may be about showing respect and love for their country. Moreover, for some, it may also be as simple as singing the national anthem. In this essay, I will attempt to explore and uncover the true meaning of this unique word ‘patriotism’ and express my own opinions and ideas about it.
To me, patriotism refers to the passionate love and affection one has for his/her country. This virtue compels citizens to selflessly work for the betterment of their country. A truly developed nation is built by true patriots. In other words, patriotism means prioritising the interests of the country before one’s own. Patriotism becomes particularly evident during times of war. Furthermore, it helps strengthen the nation as a whole. We often refer to our country as our motherland, which further emphasises the need to love our country as deeply as we love our own mothers. Our country is akin to a mother; it nurtures us and helps us grow. Everyone should possess the virtue of patriotism as it contributes to the betterment of society and enhances the quality of life for its citizens.
Patriotism is achieved by fostering a collective sense of responsibility and by encouraging people to work for the common interest of the country. When everyone is dedicated to improving the nation, conflicts of interest diminish. This creates a happier environment and promotes peace and harmony. When citizens have a spirit of brotherhood, they support one another, thereby fostering a more harmonious nation. A prime example of this brotherhood was demonstrated on August 15, 1947, when the British Empire ended and the unity among the people of our country was showcased. True patriotism brings a sense of responsibility, just as great power comes with great responsibilities. In this context, power refers to freedom. Freedom is the most potent tool an individual possesses—a tool for self-expression, unity, assistance to others, discerning right from wrong, shaping one’s destiny. This tool should be respected from the depths of our souls and hearts. It was this tool that transformed ordinary people into legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, George Washington, who fought for their people’s freedom.
However, as I mentioned, patriotism is a unique word. Soldiers who protect us from enemies are patriots, but so are community workers. Policemen who maintain law and order are patriots, but a person who plants trees and helps preserve nature is also a patriot. In summary, can we say that a patriot is someone who not only respects and loves their own country but also all living creatures? This perspective expands the meaning of patriotism beyond the definition found in dictionaries or followed by the majority. Patriotism is not limited to showing love and affection to one’s own country and its citizens; it is about respecting and cherishing humanity as a whole and appreciating diverse cultures and traditions alongside our own. If we all support and respect each other’s freedom, there would be no wars, no loss of life, and borders would dissolve, leading to peace and harmony. This redefines the meaning of patriotism, marking true independence for all—an independence from hatred, jealousy, wars, and inequality. Together, we can strive for a better future.
In conclusion, this essay explored two meanings of the word ‘patriotism’: one being ‘love for an individual country’ and the other being ‘love for all countries and traditions.’ The choice of which meaning to embrace lies with each individual. This essay also highlights the need to fight for independence from hate, anger, jealousy, and inequality, in order to end wars and eliminate borders between people and countries.
