Theatre, my identity!

Published

on

After a significant break, I embraced the challenge of directing a production based on Amrita Pritam’s life. Sitting in the director’s chair, rehearsing on stage, and meticulously planning lights, set, costume, and design brought back delightful memories from my graduation days and reaffirmed how deeply ingrained theatre is in my identity.

Collaborating with my team, we envisioned a woman-centric play, aiming to portray the many dimensions of Amrita’s life. We sought to portray her evolution across various stages, highlighting her interactions with the men who shaped her journey, her emotions, her autonomy, her vulnerabilities, and her personal growth—not merely as a renowned poetess of her era, but more so as a human being.

A particularly cherished element of our production was the incorporation of songs by Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi, tailored to different situations. The actors performed the songs live on stage, captivating the audience even more. At the heart of the play lay Amrita’s journey of finding herself and fully accepting and embracing her emotions while doing so.

I am immensely grateful to my talented teammates, Kajal and Shruti, for bringing their creative brilliance to the production. Special thanks to Professor Mudita Raj for her encouragement and writing expertise. Apeejay Institute provided an incredible opportunity, and I’m thankful for their support. And, finally, heartfelt thanks to all who joined us—your presence made it all worthwhile.
