She is a teacher at St Albans School and therefore looking for a school that would not only be perfect for her kids but also meet her standards was a daunting task. But it was a challenge that Meenakshi Bisht took head-on. She looked at almost all the top schools in Faridabad and made a list. She also made a list of what she wanted from the school for her son, Kanishk, and then later her daughter, Kavya who are students at Apeejay School, Sector 15 in Faridabad in classes VI and IV respectively.

“I looked for a school that had the perfect blend of scholastic and non-scholastic activities. Today, it is necessary that the child has an overall development. When I looked at Apeejay, I found out that the school was strong academically and offered plenty of co-curricular opportunities. Therefore, I didn’t look at any other school,” Meenakshi said.

In an impromptu interview, the mother of two talks about how her daughter stands out in the crowd.

What is the progress of your children post-Covid?

Both of them are coping with schoolwork now that everything has gone offline. It was a bit of an adjustment initially but everything is back on track. They have even started participating in co-curricular activities in the school. The teachers give both my kids ample opportunity to take part in the events that are organised.

What is the role that the teachers are playing in Kanishk and Kavya’s academic progress?

I am a teacher and realise that things are being done differently today. Even during the pandemic, there was a lot of pressure on the teachers since everything shifted online. But the teachers stepped up, especially those at Apeejay, and ensured that the learning continued albeit any gaps that may have occurred.

How are the teachers at Apeejay?

As I mentioned, the teachers stepped up during online classes. If I had any queries, they would immediately step in and call back and clarify any doubts that I had. The best part was that the teachers were available to the students day and night. My son is all praise for his Sheena ma’am. All the teachers in this school are excellent.

Do you see a difference in your kids and their friends from other schools?

There is a difference. And the reason is simple. Schools like Apeejay give so much exposure to their students that end up becoming confident in their approach which contributes to personality development as well.

How is the parent-teacher interaction?

It is very good. I get regular updates about my children’s progress in class. If my child falters in the class, I immediately get a message and the teacher even suggests ways that can help the child improve.

Have you set expectations for your children?

Each parent wants their children to do better than what they (parents) have achieved. So yes, my husband, who has a business, and I want our children to take the Civil Services exam. There is a certain charm and prestige associated with being a Civil Servant in India. But that doesn’t mean that we will force them to only follow this path. They are most welcome to pursue any profession that they want to.

How do you teach a child how to share?

Children who live in a joint family end up learning how to share. But still, it is for the parents to inculcate this habit in their children. Let’s take an example. If the household had one television, the children would automatically learn to adjust and compromise. If one is watching a show at a particular time, the other will also get his/her chance.

Being in a joint family also teaches kids problem-solving abilities and teamwork. They don’t have to be dependent on their parents to bail them out all the time. These skills come in handy when they are in their professional life.

Would you recommend Apeejay to other parents?

I do this all the time. I see how my children talk and behave in public; everyone says that they are so well-mannered. I tell all the parents that they should change their children’s school to Apeejay
