Human values provide a moral and ethical framework that enhances the overall development of students, preparing them to navigate life’s challenges with integrity, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. These values provide students with a strong ethical foundation. Understanding values such as honesty, integrity, and responsibility helps students make ethical decisions in various aspects of their lives.

Instilling these values in students promotes respect for diversity. Students learn to appreciate and embrace differences in culture, religion, and background, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious environment. Students who internalise human values are more likely to make thoughtful and principled choices, whether in academics, relationships, or personal endeavours.

Therefore, Apeejay Education is committed to the holistic development of students and ensures that they become ethical human beings with the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity. The students who personify and exhibit these values in their daily lives are awarded the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

Meet one such student — Adhiraj Bhattacharya of class VI at Apeejay Svran Global, Faridabad in Sector 21-D. In an impromptu interview, he defines human values.

How thrilled and excited were you when you found out about receiving the award?

I was extremely thrilled and excited when I learned about receiving the award. It was a new and amazing experience for me. The process involved two rounds of oral interviews and a test. After I cleared the test, I had an interview with the teachers which was followed by a final interview with the principal.

Were you nervous during these rounds? What were your apprehensions?

Yes, I was a bit nervous during the interviews. It was my first time, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was concerned about how I would perform and whether the questions would be difficult.

Have you heard about these awards before?

I first heard about these awards when my sister was nominated and got the award. She provided some guidance, but I mostly had to handle the process on my own. I believe these awards represent individual effort and achievement. While help is valuable, the pride in one’s work comes from personal effort. It’s essential to take ownership of your accomplishments.

What inspires you about Dr. Satya Paul’s life?

There are so many things that we can take from his life. He had such a larger-than-life persona. To be specific, Dr Satya Paul’s discipline and his humble behaviour towards others inspire me. I admire his achievements, and I aspire to be as successful as him.

Could you share a bit about yourself? Do you have any career aspirations?

I aspire to sit for the Civil Services and qualify for IAS. I’m inspired by history and want to serve my country. Becoming an IAS officer aligns with that goal. I’m not influenced by family background or pressure; it’s my personal choice.

Are you involved in charity work or helping others?

Yes, I am a member of a charity – Interact Club. We participate in activities both within and outside of school, like during festivals and events.

Can you define what being human means to you?

Being human, to me, means respecting our culture and treating others well. It’s about understanding the needs and challenges of others. Once you understand the challenges that others face you can empathise with them and lend a helping hand.

How do you encourage your friends to help those in need?

I tell them the importance of helping those less fortunate. I remind them that not everyone has the same privileges and that lending a helping hand is a way to make a positive impact on the community.

What role have your parents played in instilling these values in you?

My mother has always told me to help those who are in need. She has encouraged me to donate my old clothes on my birthday, fostering the value of giving back. I believe that parents play a crucial role in shaping our values.

My teachers have also emphasised the importance of helping others. They’ve taught me that acts of kindness benefit not only the recipients but also contribute to our growth. They have told me that what you give comes back to you.

How do you plan to carry forward these values as you grow older?

I plan to continue contributing to health and education initiatives, focusing on underprivileged children. Donations and assistance to those in need will be a part of my commitment as I grow older.
