The holistic development of a child is incomplete without sports. Surely, it is an integral part of education and helps develop necessary skills. A child learns teamwork, collaboration, goodwill, and further develops discipline, the spirit of sportsmanship as well as leadership while playing any sport.

Sharing this spirit, the Pre-primary section of Apeejay School, Kharghar in Navi Mumbai recently held the annual sports meet, ‘Super Nova’.  The event was conducted in collaboration with an academy based in Delhi. Their team of sincere, hard-working coaches and instructors aided the smooth functioning of the programme. Further, the day enabled the students and school staff to enhance their sports skills and test their physical strength.

Esteemed guests, Ms Rajshree Sancheti, an International-level shooter and Ms Jyoti Chopra, a celebrated handball coach, graced the occasion along with the school’s Principal, Ms Tejaswini Katdare. Together, they inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp. In addition to this, the guests encouraged students to adopt an active lifestyle and inculcate sports in their routine.

The audience witnessed a plethora of events with great zeal, excitement in a frolicsome atmosphere. Some of the events included ball drill, parachute drill, and bottle drill in which students showcased their talent. According to Ms Basabdutta Barui, a primary teacher in the school, “It was an amazing show! The students and parents took part in great number.”

A vital part of the programme was ‘suryanamaskar’, which conveyed the message of self-care and self-preservation. Kids also displayed gymnastics, hurdles and obstacle drills to prove their mettle. They promoted how exercise is important for maintaining a perfect balance of the mind and the body.

On the sports track, hurdle race, my fair lady race, shuttle race, three-legged race, obstacle race, flat and relay race, were some of the highlights. The student mascots in the disguise of panda and tiger also stole the show with their vigour, enthusiasm, and confidence. They conveyed the message of saving animals and conserving Mother Nature.

Before the closing of the day, an energetic ‘tug of war’ competition was held for the parents of the school students. This was followed by a prize distribution ceremony. All the coordinators, teachers, students, parents appreciated the school’s endeavour.

“The celebrated Portuguese footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo said, if you don’t believe you are the best, then you will never achieve all that you are capable of. And so, at Apeejay, we believe that the most important activity in a child’s progress is sports. It enhances the psychomotor skills, agility, concentration as well as critical thinking skills and induces problem solving ability in children.  In addition to this, fitness of the body and the mind is essential to be happy. Therefore, tiny tots displayed their skills and flexibility at the annual sports day of the school.”
