Apeejay School, Pitampura recently conducted an Open-Mic session to encourage the oratory skills of students. The session held on December 11, 2021 was loosely based on the format of the Ted Conferences.
The open-mic event at the school witnessed participation from 16 select students across classes 6 to 9, the majority of which were first timers at public speaking. Students Madhav Narang and R Kartik anchored the event and enlightened their classmates about writing their own stories and sharing their perspectives to shape their critical thinking.
The participants shared their ideas on a variety of topics such as: secret to students’ success, what your grades really mean, what they learnt from their seniors, etc. They expressed their personal journey, key learnings and lessons with admirable diction and clarity of thought. Dr. Reena Chauhan, mother of Anika, a class 6 student-participant, says, “I want to appreciate the efforts of the school teachers in putting together this event. The session let the students’ voices be heard and provided them with an opportunity to learn from their classmates, friends and seniors.”
Student-participant Ishani Monga from class 9 says, “The event not only raised my confidence, but also improved my communication and vocal skills. It was informative, motivating and very well organised.” Dr. Anshu, mother of class 8 student Prabhav Gupta, opines, “Ted talk is a brilliant idea to improve the speaking skills of youngsters. Our son, Prabhav enjoyed the activity very much!”
At the event, the school Principal, Ms. Veena Goel, encouraged the students and further appreciated the English department of the school for putting forth the idea. In her address, she said, “The topics have been beautifully chosen and curated by the students. Especially, the ones from junior classes have given us, adults, great learnings during the session. Each one of us has to have their own parameters to excel. Little steps leading towards an ultimate goal is success.”
“It gives me immense pleasure to hear young students boldly express their opinion on a public platform. There is a lot of research involved as they are garnering nuggets of experiences. Immense learning is happening amongst students, I would say!”
