Science Made Easy: Don’t underestimate the easy, 5 strategies for success

Don’t miss easy points; learn to master every subject, advises a Science teacher from Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri

When it comes to learning, some students can easily overlook what seemed easy. This, much to their dismay, later ended up losing marks on those areas they so thought they were well set with. According to Pankaj Kaushik, TGT Science at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, sometimes students take the chapter lightly which they find easy. “It is the student’s misunderstanding and misconception that can lead to a low score. For instance, in the chapter Our Environment, the student should learn keywords and logical questions. It has been observed that they score less because they leave studying the chapter or related topics at the last minute. The truth is that they should devote proper time learning these chapters/topics even if it is,” the educator shared.

But how do students uncover the important educational fallacy — the confusion between familiarity and mastery? What should students do to make sure that they score full marks in these ‘easy’ chapters?

Some strategies to follow

1. Revisiting with Fresh Eyes:

Approach each chapter as if it is new. Attitude brings new details and fine shades that previously have not been noticed. Students need to go through their class notes and textbooks and go through those with extra reference materials or educational videos for the consolidation of ideas.

2. Active Engagement:

Discussion in the classroom requires active participation. Students must learn to ask questions — even those that appear inconsequential or easy to understand. An active discussion helps reinforce knowledge and clears any subtle misunderstandings. “The greatest advantage of paying attention can be brought about by simply being there mentally and participating. That would make a big difference,” Kaushik said.

3. Pay more attention to Keywords and Logic:

Understanding any chapter is first rooted in its keywords and the logical explanation of concepts. Prepare flashcards for keywords and use them in various contexts to achieve flexibility in your understanding. Along with that, solve logical questions and problems to increase critical thinking and application skills. In this way, the student gets well-equipped for not only the standard exam but also the unconventional questions coming their way.

4. Timed Practice Tests:

Regular testing under timed conditions can dramatically improve recall and understanding. It also helps students to manage their time effectively during actual exams. Regular testing of oneself on the material allows students to recognize weak spots in knowledge, even in the chapters that they feel are easy.

5. Study Groups and Peer Teaching:

One of the strongest methods of setting an understanding is explaining concepts to peers. This peer-teaching method can be easily allowed for in study groups in such a manner that students can challenge each other to misunderstandings and fill knowledge gaps together.

“Students often fail to give adequate time to chapters that they consider easy, which leads to a lower score in the exam. This can be reconverted into a sure success by revisiting the material systematically and thoughtfully,” Kaushik said in conclusion.
