Reviving cultural roots through traditional sports in students

Familiarising students with these games comes with a host of benefits, they instil quick reflexes and team spirit

Today, almost every walk of life has been digitised and, through experience, it is realised that it is connected to our cultural roots and rejuvenates overall all-round development in students. Games like Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, and Carrom are traditional Indian games providing special opportunities to have them in-built into modern pedagogy in education, at the same time, involving an element of culture and team spirit.

Kho-Kho is one of the oldest outdoor games that provides a lot of aerobic exercise with strategic thinking during the play; it allows a very good experience in teamwork. Laying out the set-up or playing it is not that very complicated it is easy to play and yet it allows agility and coordination and teaches lessons on cooperation and leadership.

One more traditional Indian game which is high on energy is Kabaddi. In this sport, the students would benefit in a host of ways like endurance, quick reflexes, and instilling the spirit of a team. This game immediately, since it is concerned with team play, easily becomes an ideal game to inculcate oneness or collective efforts among the students within the team, in which strategy building through communication is required.

Other indoor games that require a great amount of quiet include Carrom. While it is played in actuality with a very high level of quiet, it is very effective in bringing about sharpness in concentration, precision, and estimation of angles. This one can also be played between teams where it has the effect of inclusiveness, teaching the values of patience, turn-taking, and tactical thinking to the student.

Familiarising students with these games makes them understand the history and values of their community. This will not only improve the total learning experience of the students but also establish, in a way, the means for such games to be preserved for posterity. Traditional games will work in a positive light against the sedentary lifestyle imposed by gadget use in young students. It will hence be properly integrated with the introduction of dynamic, engaging forms of physical activity that foment active lifestyles and reduce cases of social isolation.

On the whole, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, and Carrom besides building the sharpness of the brain, and serving social causes, help to maintain and foster the rich cultural heritage of India. Such games should be introduced to the children by the parents making it a part of the Indian culture that would inspire and be reflected in the children.
