A Class VIII-A student at Apeejay School, Saket, Somica Mukherjee, discovered her singing talent in Class III during a Zoom class. Encouraged by her teachers, she now studies at a music school and is preparing for her next music grade exam. The 13-year-old is passionate about music. In a candid interview, she talks about her favourite performance, among other things.

What inspired you to join the choir?

Three things inspired me to pursue music: My teachers encouraged me to showcase my talent, I discovered self-expression through my voice and school experiences, and I cherished singing the Bengali song Phule Phule Dhole Dhole, taught by my beloved grandmother and aunt since I was five. Together, these shaped my dream of a music career.

Have you ever faced stage fright? If yes, how did you overcome it?

Yes, I’ve faced stage fright. Singing solo felt daunting at first, but I overcame it by immersing myself in the music, feeling the lyrics, imagining the emotions, and believing in my dream, with support from loved ones.

How does it feel to perform in front of the whole school or at events?

Performing can feel magical, like butterflies in your stomach, mixed with fear of making mistakes. But even if your voice breaks or you miss a note, it’s still beautiful. Music has countless scale combinations, and imperfections can add charm. Think of them as happy little accidents that uniquely enhance the performance.

How do you prepare for a big performance – mentally and vocally?

Our practice sessions are always lively and full of joy. Even during short breaks, we play antakshari with our music teachers because we simply can’t stop singing. It feels like a reunion — blending the voices of old and new choir members in perfect harmony. Each voice fits like a puzzle piece, making us feel part of a beautiful composition in progress.

Which performance has been your favourite so far and why?

My favourite choir performance was our 2024 Annual Day. We poured energy, passion, and teamwork into the raag, bonded behind the scenes, and even shared snacks. It was a beautiful, united effort that exceeded our expectations. For solo singing, my favourite moment was at the 2022 carnival, La Fiesta, where I performed five songs, especially Lovely, which became a crowd favourite.

How does the school encourage you?

My school encouraged me by involving me in various singing competitions — both Inter-school and house events. I also perform regularly on annual days, carnivals, and assemblies, where singing was always a highlight. These opportunities helped me grow, showcase my unique talent, and contribute to our choir’s artistry. I embraced every chance to sing and gave it my best.
