Not just physical agility, sports have many other benefits. It is known to improve overall health, reduce stress, and improve concentration levels. It also builds character and acts as a great motivator. It teaches sportsman spirit, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Children, therefore, can benefit a lot from sports.

To teach children the importance of physical fitness and sports, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, celebrated National Sports Day in their school to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Dhyan Chand Singh. Regarded as one of the greatest field hockey players in history, Dhyan Chand was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats and also won three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936.

At the school event, pre-primary students, from classes nursery to 1, were told about the importance of National Sports Day. The physical education teachers also conducted several fun games like catching ball, hopping, crossing hurdles, passing the parcel, and so on, which the little ones enjoyed thoroughly.

National Sports Day is celebrated in India on August 29. Apart from the hockey legend, the day is also observed to honour the country’s sports heroes and champions and their dedication to winning laurels for their nation.

“The word well spread by young Apeejayites is, ‘Sports is a path to healthy and soulful living.’ Holistic development of a student is possible only when he/she is physically fit and emotionally balanced.”
