She describes herself as a legal researcher with expertise in legal drafting, project planning, and proficiency in written and verbal English. She is also well-versed in Microsoft Word and Excel; and has critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to name a few. Meet Riya Maurya, a student of the School of Legal Studies-Apeejay Stya University.

In a candid interview, Riya, who got campus placement with Savemoney Financial Services Pvt Ltd in Gurugram, talks about how she is truly an Apeejayite.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am pursuing my BA LLB degree (Fifth year) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU). I am looking forward to the next steps in my career. I plan to pursue an LLM and then apply for the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Department in the Indian Army.

Any particular reason why you chose law?

The path to becoming a JAG is unique because it necessitates having a legal background. Hence, pursuing law became my gateway to achieving this dream. It’s been my dream and goal for quite some time now, and everything I’m doing academically is geared towards achieving this aim. The immediate plan is to perhaps pursue an LLM. It’s the logical next academic step for me, although not strictly necessary for the JAG role, but beneficial for my career growth.

Tell us about your time at the School of Law at ASU.

Reflecting on the past five years, it has been a mix of challenges and growth, especially with the unexpected shift to online learning during COVID-19. Back then two-and-a-half years were spent at home. But when the classes shifted offline, I would say the journey has been rewarding.

How and why did you choose ASU?

I am a proud Apeejayite. I studied at Apeejay School in Faridabad in Sector 15 for seven years. So, I was aware that the group has a university. I was familiar with the teaching methodology. Also, it was a personal decision based on the institute’s reputation and the opportunities it offers. I did extensive research on various institutions, and ASU stood out as a prime choice for my legal studies.

Tell us about your experience with the Apeejay.

My association with Apeejay Education has been transformative, providing me with a solid foundation in my formative years. ASU has been instrumental in nurturing my academic and personal growth. The teachers and faculty have been incredibly supportive, fostering a conducive learning environment.

What is one of the things that you probably have learnt that helped you develop your skills?

The teaching methodology here, with an emphasis on group discussions and practical learning, has significantly enhanced my analytical and practical skills, preparing me for real-world challenges. While there are theory and chapters to read and learn from (50 per cent); there is equal emphasis on imparting practical knowledge.

You’ve recently been placed. Tell us your experience

I received a job offer recently, which was a moment of great pride. ASU played a crucial role in preparing me for the job market. The faculty’s guidance on potential interview questions and previous internship experiences was invaluable. While the offer was great I decided not to accept it for the time being.

Any particular reason why you prefer not to take up this job?

The job, while a great opportunity, was located in Gurugram, I live in Faridabad which would require a lengthy commute of at least two hours each way. This practical concern influenced my decision. The position was for a loan settlement officer at Savemoney Finances Private Limited. It presented a unique challenge, but ultimately, it did not align with my career aspirations towards the Army.

How do you go about applying for your dream job in the Army?

The process is quite straightforward yet competitive. One must apply through the Army’s official website and meet the necessary academic requirements, including clearing the CLAT for LLM.

Tell us about your life on campus.

Campus life has been an incredible part of my journey, filled with lasting friendships and memorable experiences, from festivals to moot court competitions.
