Choosing the right school for your child can be quite stressful for many parents. This is because, in India, a lot of parents are deeply concerned about the quality of education their children receive. They look for schools that not only excel academically but also offer holistic development opportunities, including extracurricular activities, sports, and life skills education. Finding an institute that matches their expectations can be challenging. More so when it comes to choosing between an IB and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum.
But parents like Simran Soni, whose son Vedant Sehrawat studies at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, chose an IB school because they offer a comprehensive education that prepares students for global citizenship, higher education, and a successful career, while also focusing on personal growth and ethical understanding.
In a candid interview, the mother talks about her son’s growth and the skills he has developed to date.
How and why did you choose Apeejay for your son?
We were primarily looking for an engaging and comprehensive curriculum that emphasises critical thinking and pragmatic learning, which led us to choose ASI. The proximity of the school to our home played a significant role in our decision, alongside the school’s highly trained teachers. We were particularly drawn to the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum offered by this school, given its reputation for fostering holistic development and instilling a spirit of inquiry in students. This curriculum stands out for its integration of various subjects and its competency-based approach, which aligns with our desire for a top-tier education for our son.
What made you specifically look for an IB school, and what advantages do you see in the IB curriculum?
As an SOP editor who assists students in studying abroad, I’ve always valued an international curriculum that prepares students for global challenges. The IB curriculum’s focus on developing well-rounded personalities through in-depth research, critical evaluation, and a seamless integration of subjects like Economics, Math, and Science significantly appealed to me. It encourages students to explore and connect different concepts, enhancing their overall perspective and competency without the pressure of conventional educational systems. The extended essay requirement, for instance, pushes students to critically evaluate topics, which is a unique aspect of the IB curriculum not found in others.
Could you share your experience with the school’s approach to advanced students like your son?
My son joined ASI in PYP-1 (class 1) but the school quickly recognised his advanced abilities. Within two months, the school assessed him and promoted him to PYP-2 (class II), demonstrating the school’s exceptional support and recognition of individual student needs. This adaptability and responsiveness to a child’s learning pace is something we highly value at this school.
How does the school support students in the rigorous IB curriculum?
It provides extensive support and guidance through small class sizes and personalised learning approaches. The teachers’ focus on developing each student’s competencies, along with a stress-free environment that encourages collaboration through projects and student initiatives, effectively prepares students for future challenges. This nurturing approach fosters a strong foundation in critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity among students.
What skills has your son developed at ASI that you believe are unique to the IB curriculum?
My son has shown remarkable growth in quantitative reasoning, logical thinking, and innovative problem-solving. The curriculum’s emphasis on inquiry-based learning has allowed him to explore complex topics like water conservation creatively and critically. His ability to work comfortably in diverse groups and his development in thinking, reflection, and introspection skills are standout aspects of his education at this school, which we believe are unique to the IB curriculum.
How does the school encourage student engagement in co-curricular activities and creativity?
The school places a strong emphasis on holistic development, offering students opportunities to engage in a variety of co-curricular activities, from environmental projects like rainwater harvesting to participation in theater productions. This exposure not only enhances their academic learning but also develops their social and creative skills, contributing to their overall growth.
Can you share your thoughts on the teachers and staff?
The teachers and staff at ASI have been incredibly supportive and accessible, always willing to go the extra mile to assist students and parents alike. Their professionalism and kindness have significantly contributed to the positive educational experience. The seamless administrative processes, like Vedant’s grade advancement, highlight the school’s efficient and caring approach to education.
How has Vedant adapted to the IB curriculum?
He has adapted exceptionally well to the IB curriculum, thanks to his prior exposure to international curriculums like Cambridge. His ability to mentor peers from different educational backgrounds, including CBSE, on various subjects and cultural sensitivities speaks volumes about the comprehensive and advanced nature of the IB curriculum at ASI. His journey from Cambridge to IB has been smooth and beneficial, allowing him to excel and contribute positively to his community.
