Meet Pandit Rishi Shankar Upadhyay, an esteemed educator and celebrated classical musician at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, who has recently been conferred the prestigious Top Grade Artist recognition by Prasar Bharati (All India Radio & Doordarshan), the highest national honour awarded to musicians in India. Bestowed after a rigorous evaluation by a panel of eminent maestros, this rare distinction recognises exceptional artistic excellence, contribution to Indian classical music, and dedication towards preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
A revered mentor and performer, Pandit Upadhyay continues to inspire students through his passion, discipline, and lifelong commitment to music, making the entire Apeejay family immensely proud of his remarkable achievement.
You received a lot of appreciation for your achievements. How did that feel?
It was a very emotional and proud moment for me. Seeing the happiness on my parents’ faces means everything. Their blessings and support have always motivated me to keep moving forward, for it is the matter that my father is also my Guru. I also feel grateful for the encouragement I receive from the Apeejay family. My colleagues and teachers appreciated me wholeheartedly, and that love inspires me to work harder every day.
Tell us about your musical journey.
Music has been a part of my life since childhood. I started learning at a very young age and gradually realised that music was not just a hobby but my purpose. Even after spending nearly 28–29 years in the artistic field, I still consider myself a student because learning in music never stops.
What makes being an artist special?
An artist represents culture, tradition, and the spirit of the country wherever they perform. Indian classical music, especially, carries the essence of our heritage. That responsibility has always inspired me to continue learning and performing with dedication.
You have been associated with the school since 2017. How do you balance teaching and performing?
Most of my concerts happen in the evenings or on weekends, so I manage both responsibilities carefully. Sometimes, after a late-night concert, I travel overnight and come directly to school. I never want my commitment towards students to suffer. A teacher must always stay sincere and responsible towards children.
Role of discipline in music.
Discipline is extremely important in music. In the guru-shishya tradition, respect, humility, and dedication are the foundation of learning. Music is not just about singing or playing an instrument, it is about values, patience, and lifelong learning.
Why is Indian classical music important for today’s generation?
It is the foundation of all music and one of our greatest cultural treasures. It teaches patience, hard work, and emotional depth. Today’s generation should stay connected to it because it helps preserve our traditions and identity.
How do you inspire students to connect with classical music?
Students often watch my concerts and performances on social media and become curious about learning music. They ask questions and show interest in attending concerts. I always encourage them to listen to different artists, observe, and keep learning with an open mind.
What do you try to teach students beyond music?
As teachers, our responsibility is not only to teach music but also to pass on values and moral understanding. Children should learn respect for parents, teachers, and traditions because these values help shape strong character.
What message would you like to give to Apeejayites?
Keep learning patiently and never stop practising. Whatever I teach comes from the guidance of my guru, and I hope my students achieve even greater heights in life. Learning is a lifelong journey, and dedication always brings success.
