Your resume gets your foot in the door, but it’s your cover letter that makes you memorable. In a sea of similar qualifications and job experiences, what truly sets you apart is ‘you’. According to Dr Sonam Raheja, Associate Professor, Physics, Apeejay Stya University, “For a fresher, a cover letter is an opportunity to show more than qualifications. When work experience is limited, employers also look for enthusiasm, curiosity, communication skills and a willingness to learn. A thoughtful cover letter allows young candidates to explain why they are interested in the role and what they can bring to it, helping them stand out beyond what appears on their résumé.”

And how can freshers applying for the job for the first time do this?

A Personal Introduction

Instead of listing skills, you can explain why you’re passionate about the role. For example, you might mention how you’ve admired the company’s work for years or how a specific project inspired you to apply.

Show Your Enthusiasm

Employers want to hire people who are excited about the job. Your cover letter is the perfect place to express this. Use it to explain why the role excites you and how it aligns with your career goals. Showing enthusiasm demonstrates that you’re not just looking for any job — you want this one.

Highlight Soft Skills

While your resume shows technical skills, a cover letter lets you highlight soft skills like communication, leadership, or creativity. For example, if the job requires teamwork, you can share a brief story about a time you successfully led a group project.

Reflect Your Communication Style

It highlights how clearly and effectively you can express your ideas. This is especially important for roles that require writing, speaking, or working closely with others.

Stand Out from the Crowd

Finally, a cover letter helps you stand out. Many candidates skip this step or write generic letters. A tailored, thoughtful cover letter shows effort and attention to detail. It tells employers that you care about the role and are willing to go the extra mile.
