It is highly essential to maintain an open and friendly relationship with your children. In this manner, they are more likely to share their personal experiences, concerns, and thoughts. Children often look up to their parents as their support system.
Pooja Arora, mother of Rayan Arora, a class III student at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, shares the innate interests of her son in a candid telephonic interview.
Excerpts from the interview
Why did you choose this school?
Apeejay is a reputed school. I am a devoted mother and I always look for unique ways to teach my children. I did not want him to be a bookworm, rather I was seeking a complete package, and Apeejay School fit this mould. A few of my family are alumni of Apeejay and this clinched the deal for me.
What are your son’s favourite activities?
Recently, Rayan has developed a keen interest in sports. He is active in playing indoor games like Chess but if I may talk about his recent interest, he loves playing football. He has joined the school’s football academy where he practices post his school hours.

Changes in your child since he joined the school.
Yes. Over the years Rayan has become a really confident child. For his good behaviour, all the credit goes to his teachers. Teachers play a crucial role in a child’s developmental phase as they spend most of their time at school as compared to home.
How do you balance your child’s screen time with school homework?
I am a very balanced mother and a little strict when it comes to allowing him to use gadgets. I have maintained his timetable. I make sure that if all his homework is complete, then only I allow him to use my phone as a token of reward but that too comes with applied conditions of a time constraint.
How do you encourage him to read more at home?
I have a simple approach. I focus on making learning a fun and engaging experience. Teaching kids these days can be challenging, so I aim to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
Rayan has an elder sister. I ask him to read a book thoroughly. Afterward, I may playfully compare his reading with his sister’s. This is not to create competition, but to boost his confidence by saying, ‘You’re doing great’! This approach makes it easier for him to enjoy reading at home. I believe it’s crucial to provide a friendly and stress-free environment for his education, rather than making it a burden.

Are PTMs held regularly?
Yes. As mentioned earlier, I am a devoted mother and intend to give special attention to my kid’s studies. I even attend all the school functions whenever I am required to be present.
Any specific strategies that you think the school follows to develop good study habits?
One of the best highlights of Apeejay Schools is, that it provides a practical learning environment. The primary reason for choosing this school was that the teachers here are highly supportive and the way they teach kids has a unique approach.
What is your parenting mantra?
Parenting is not an easy job as it requires full-time, commitment, and hard work. My parenting mantra says, while you are handling kids, you need a lot of patience. It is important to be friendly with your child. Children look up to their parents as their only support system, and we must abide by their expectations. Other than that, as we grow we keep learning new things. And I believe, I am also in my learning phase when it comes to parenting. Every day is a new learning experience.
