Colleges in the US are experiencing a notable resurgence in international student enrollment, particularly fuelled by a significant increase from India. A recent study revealed a remarkable 35 per cent surge in Indian students attending US universities, marking a substantial rebound from the pandemic-related decline observed in the previous year.

The 2022-23 academic year witnessed an overall growth of 12 per cent in the number of international students in the US, representing the most substantial single-year increase in over four decades. Collaborative research from the State Department and the Institute of International Education, a non-profit organisation, disclosed that the total international student population exceeded 1 million, reaching levels not seen since the 2019-20 school year.

Allan E Goodman, the CEO of the Institute of International Education, emphasised that these findings underscore the enduring appeal of the US as the preferred destination for international students seeking education abroad—a trend that has persisted for over a century.

Breaking down the demographics, American colleges welcomed nearly 269,000 students from India, a record-high figure and second only to China in terms of international student representation. The majority of Indian students chose graduate programmes, with a prevalent focus on science, technology, and business disciplines.
