In a world where AI can generate an image in seconds, why would anyone spend hours learning the fundamentals of composition, lighting and storytelling by hand? For 21-year-old Manga Srikanth, a B.Des Animation and Multimedia student at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram, the answer is simple: the tools will keep changing, but the eye for a good story never goes out of style.
From wrestling with his first 3D models to thinking about how AI will reshape the creative industry he’s about to enter, Manga has spent his time at ASU learning to blend imagination with technical precision. Here, he talks about the classroom projects that pushed him hardest, his process for tackling a blank canvas, and the advice he’d give anyone just starting out in design.
Why did you opt for B.Des Animation and Multimedia?
I chose Animation and Multimedia because I have always been interested in creating visuals and bringing ideas to life. I wanted to pursue a field where I could combine creativity with technology. Animation gives me the opportunity to explore areas such as 3D modelling, animation, visual design, storytelling, and AI-based content creation, which are the areas I am most interested in developing professionally.
What made you choose ASU? How are the teachers shaping your skills?
I chose ASU because of its practical approach to education and the opportunities it provides students to explore their creative interests. I felt that the course would give me a good balance between design fundamentals and practical skills.
The teachers have played an important role in my development. They encourage us to experiment with different ideas rather than simply follow one approach. Their feedback on our projects helps me understand where I can improve. They also encourage us to explore new technologies and techniques.
Can you share a memorable classroom project or assignment that challenged your creativity or taught you something new?
One of the most memorable parts of my course has been working on 3D modelling and animation projects. These projects challenged me because creating something in 3D requires much more than just making it look good. I had to think about modelling, composition, lighting, movement, storytelling, and how the final output would be experienced by the audience.
These projects taught me that creativity and technical skills have to work together. A good idea becomes much stronger when you understand how to execute it properly.
How do you approach research when starting a new design project?
I usually start by understanding the objective and target audience of the project. Once I know what I am trying to communicate, I look for visual references, existing work, trends, and different approaches that could help me develop the idea.
I also create a moodboard or collect references before starting the actual design process. This helps me explore different possibilities and avoid jumping directly into execution. After that, I experiment with different ideas and gradually develop the one that communicates the concept most effectively.

What are your future aspirations?
My goal is to build a career in the 3D animation and multimedia industry. I am particularly interested in 3D modelling, animation, visual effects, and AI-assisted content creation.
The industry is changing rapidly with the development of AI and new creative technologies, so I want to develop both my traditional creative skills and my understanding of emerging tools. Eventually, I want to work on professional projects where I can combine creativity, 3D, animation, and technology.
How is a typical day in your college?
A typical day usually involves a combination of classes, practical work, discussions, and project development. Since Animation and Multimedia is a practical course, a lot of our learning happens while working on projects.
There are days when I may be working on modelling or animation, while on other days I might be developing a concept, working on a presentation, or getting feedback from my teachers. There is always something different to work on, which keeps the experience interesting.
What opportunities has the college given you to work on real-world projects?
The university has given me opportunities to work on projects where we have to think beyond just completing an assignment. Through different activities, events, presentations, and practical projects, I have been able to understand how creative work is developed for an actual audience.
These experiences have helped me understand the importance of deadlines, communication, feedback, and presenting your work professionally. They have also encouraged me to explore areas such as 3D animation and AI-generated video content.
As a novice exploring the field of design, what would be your recommendations?
I would recommend experimenting as much as possible and not being afraid of making mistakes. Design is a field where you learn a lot by actually creating things.
I would also suggest building a strong foundation instead of depending completely on software or AI tools. Learn the basics of design, storytelling, composition, and visual communication, and then use technology to enhance those skills.
Most importantly, keep creating and building a portfolio. Even small personal projects can teach you something new.
