For Saiyam Anand, civil engineering is not just a degree—it’s a calling rooted in creativity, responsibility, and innovation. The Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park alumnus speaks with purpose and clarity about how his studies are equipping him to transform cities, build safer structures, and leverage modern-day tech to tackle real-world problems. In this interview, the budding engineer explains how he aspires to create dream designs. Read edited excerpts:
How did your passion for civil engineering come about?
It started with a deep love for mathematics and a fascination with buildings and architectural marvels. Whenever I saw a structure being built, I felt drawn to it. Over time, I realised I wanted to contribute to this space through civil engineering.

What excites you the most about your course?
Civil engineering combines technical knowledge with creativity. It’s not just about construction—it’s about building safe, sustainable, and beautiful structures. We learn how to make buildings smarter, especially using innovations like AI and eco-friendly materials.
What core subjects did you learn in your first year?
Along with physics, chemistry, and math, we were taught the basics of civil engineering like construction materials and engineering geology. These subjects helped me understand how to select the right materials and factor in natural hazards when designing any structure.
How has college life shaped you as a person?
Living away from home has made me mentally strong and more self-reliant. I’ve also picked up a lot of practical knowledge and learned how to work in teams. It’s been transformative.
How would you describe the influence of your school in shaping you?
Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park gave me more than just academics. It gave me a mindset—a way of looking at the world. The atmosphere helped me develop a strong intellect and an open mind. It truly groomed me into who I am today.
What changes or improvements do you think modern structures need?
There should be greater focus on using quality materials and modern safety practices. Too often, we hear of bridges collapsing due to poor planning or negligence. We must use tech to make buildings earthquake-resistant, inclusive (with ramps and facilities for the visually impaired), and sustainable through things like rainwater harvesting and solar panels.
Where do you see yourself in four years?
I want to revolutionise civil engineering. My dream is to design cities and infrastructure that are not only strong and smart but also sensitive to the environment and inclusive for all.
