It doesn’t take a genius to guess where a student after completing class XII (Science-non medical) will go; they are bound to pursue an engineering programme. If you are from Jalandhar, then the obvious choice is to pursue BTech Computer Science Engineering. And anybody and everybody who lives in Jalandhar knows that the best institute to do this programme is Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC).

“I took Science (non-medical). When it was time to choose a career path and course, a family friend recommended that I take Computer Science since the future is all about software. I also agree, we saw how technological advancement made and the role that technology played in our lives during COVID-19. In that sense job opportunities as a software developer are only going to increase and there will be plenty of opportunities to grow professionally as well,” Varun Sharma said and added that this was the reason why he joined AIMETC.

Excerpts from an interview.

Was Computer Science something that you always wanted to pursue?

Since I had taken Science (non-medical) I knew that I would end up doing a BTech programme. It was just that I was not sure what course to follow. After speaking with a family friend, I did a lot of research and concluded that Computer Science was a good course to enroll in. After all, almost all services have shifted online and software developers are going to be in demand.

How does it feel to be earning and what did you do with your first salary?

It feels great. I can’t imagine that I am old enough to be getting a good salary – good enough given that this is my first job and I have only been working for seven months. I am sure that with time and experience, my salary will also go up. Also, my first salary went to my parents. They have done so much for me and made sacrifices, it is natural that I give back to them now.

Where are you working, and what is your work profile?

Once I completed my programme, I got a job in Gurugram. The good part is that my company where I am working as Engineer Trainee at Orange Business Services allows us to work in hybrid mode. In a month we are allowed to work from home for 10 days or so. So, it makes it easy.

My work is to develop software as per client requirements. We have a team and depending on what the client wants, my work is to work on that project.

I miss my college days. I don’t know why I miss those days. But it could be because I had a great time in the four years that I was there. The faculty was brilliant as well

What are your future plans?

After working for all these months I have also realised that I should probably do an MBA as well. I think that a combination of BE and MBA will be extremely lucrative for me. It will also help me go up the ladder faster. At present, I am just a developer but I also want to work with clients – an MBA will help me hone my skills and deal with clients.

How was the faculty at AIMETC?

Nobody is going to believe me, but the truth is that I miss my college days. I don’t know why I miss those days. But it could be because I had a great time in the four years that I was there. The faculty was brilliant as well, especially Gagandeep Singh Kahlon sir. But I believe he left right after I passed out. I loved the way he taught. It was excellent. He taught me how to speak and how to behave in the workplace. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was very sad; it meant that I couldn’t go to college. But the silver lining was that I managed to do two projects and the skills that I learnt for that project has helped me tremendously.

Are you using some of the skill sets taught at AIMETC?

Yes, definitely. I think it was in fifth or sixth semester, we were taught Data management software (DMS). This was taught to us by Ranjit sir. On the hind side, I think this was the best subject that I have studied thus far. In my present organisation I am working on DMS. This gives me an edge over my colleagues.
