It is believed that true beauty lies in care, authenticity and character. Therefore, grooming is an essential part of everyday life for people of all ages, including students. It is the act of taking care of one’s physical appearance, maintaining good qualities as well as having an optimistic viewpoint. The impact all these aspects put together can create is simply unmissable.

Imagine! You begin to present something in class and the audience is all ears simply due to your charisma. This can become true for you with the help of grooming. All you have to do is to adapt to good physical and mental practices. Further, it can help boost confidence, improve self-esteem and promote a positive self-image.

So, let’s explore some steps on how to groom yourself.

Bathe regularly: Shower daily to maintain personal hygiene. Use soap and water to clean their body and don’t forget to pay attention to areas such as underarms, feet, and groin.

Practice self-awareness: Learn to understand your thoughts, emotions, strengths, and areas for improvement. This can be done through self-reflection, journaling, or engaging in mindfulness practices.

Maintain good skincare: Take good care of your skin by washing the face with a gentle cleanser and then applying moisturiser. Sunscreen can be your new best friend this season when going out in the sun.

Engage in positive self-talk: The power of positive self-talk is immense. It can replace negative thoughts or self-doubt with affirming statements. If you begin now, soon it will become a habit which may increase confidence and overall well-being.

Wear clean clothes: Don’t repeat the same crumpled uniform the next day. Dress appropriately for every occasion and avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or revealing.

Set attainable goals: Breaking down large goals into smaller, manageable tasks can provide a sense of progress and accomplishment, fostering motivation and self-esteem.

Keep hair neat: If your appearance is pleasing, people will naturally want to know from you. So, keep those strands of hair neat and clean. Style it in a way that is elegant and statement.

Build healthy relationships: Maintain and nurture bonds with friends, family, and mentors. Develop open communication, empathy, and active listening skills.

Prioritise self-care: Activities that promote mental and emotional well-being are crucial. This includes getting adequate sleep, eating nutritious meals, engaging in physical exercise, and pursuing hobbies and activities that bring joy and relaxation to you.

According to Ms Neha Sharma, IBDP coordinator at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park “The key to excel in today’s fast evolving world is to have a growth mindset. So, young adults need to up-skill and groom themselves in order to ace the roadmap ahead. Opting for an appropriate outfit makes one stand out in a crowd.” She suggests students to revisit their clothes’ selection before heading towards any sort of social meet.

“Some other key elements include being grounded and focused and conducting themselves with dignity. Lastly, body language speaks volumes about an individual. So, young minds must ensure to not slouch. Wear a smile and be poised at all times,” she says.

When asked the celebrity fashion stylist, Ms Sakshi Kumar, about the subject, she says, “Gen Z has a lot of exposure as well as social commitments, therefore, we need to educate them about grooming. In the school, even if students wear the same uniform, each person has his/her own sense of style. And to enhance one’s persona, a hairstyle or a simple tuck can make a big difference. My suggestion to students is to conduct themselves appropriately with confidence as well as adopt a positive body language.”

As far as personal grooming at home is concerned, the expert recommends dressing up as per body type and face shape. She advises students to make thoughtful outfit choices as per colours, cuts and lengths. “When one looks and feels good, it is an instant confidence-booster.” She further suggests fellow parents to pay attention to their child’s dress sense and creativity. A word of appreciation on their overall appearance can go a long way, according to her. Ms Kumar is the mother of Arnav, a student at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.

So, having a positive mindset, practicing gratitude, focusing on strengths, and celebrating their achievements, are also part of good grooming. Nurture a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities for learning. Develop a positive self-image and inculcate habits that will reward you well throughout your academic and social life.

Good luck!
