The global talent gap, a problem we’ve been griping about forever, just keeps on getting worse. I mean, in the US alone, there are 9.6 million job openings, and guess what? Only 6.5 million people are looking for jobs. So, everybody’s shouting about upskilling and re-skilling the folks already on the job, but here’s the kicker – business leaders totally get the need, but they’re stuck. Why? Because they’re strapped for time, short on resources, and running low on funds to whip up training materials for their workforce.
Now, here comes this Cypher Learning crew, talking about how generative AI could be the game-changer. According to them, this tech can help leaders tackle the challenges of upskilling, build training materials, and bridge the gap between the job market and the workforce.
The study Generative AI in 2024: A potential lifeline amid workplace turbulence, reveals that HR and enterprise big shots in 2024 are sweating over talent retention, staff well-being, and upskilling. No surprise there. More than half of them (65%) say upskilling is key to plugging skill gaps, but here’s the kicker – nearly 70% don’t have the resources to whip up relevant training materials. And 69% are admitting they lack the skills to make the most of this tech in their roles. So, guess what? Only half of the workers are getting decent training opportunities.
The World Economic Forum is predicting a ‘new era of turbulence’ in 2024. The job market’s shaking up, and we need a workforce that can handle it. Economic shifts, geopolitical drama, supply chain changes, and all that jazz are causing a quarter of jobs to change in the next five years. Gartner’s even predicting employee turnover to be 50-75% higher than what we’re used to. Yikes!
Generative AI is a superhero that can whip up all sorts of learning materials – text, images, videos, interactive stuff – and build courses in no time. Cypher says it’s a time-saver. But, and there’s always ‘a but’, almost half of the folks (44%) are worried about data security and the accuracy of what this AI is churning out. More than half are freaking out about losing their jobs to AI, and 57% are scratching their heads about how AI could actually help them.
Most people (77%) said that they use AI more if they knew it wasn’t feeding them load of bull. And a whopping 87% want Gen AI more user-friendly, and might actually give it a shot. But get this – over three-quarters (86%) of HR and business leaders admit they or their teams are already using this tech. They’re using it to gamify training, jazz up professional development, build assessments, track learner progress, and, of course, save some precious time on creating courses.
Looking ahead, they’re saying they are not just rehashing the same old learning methods with AI. It’s about using AI smartly to give education a facelift. Virtual learning assistants or mentors, with a human eye overseeing things, are gearing up to support personalised development. Imagine personalised learning journeys powered by AI, tossing interesting topics at you based on your interests.
Bottom line, the guy behind this report thinks 2024 will see the rise of proactive, but not out-of-control, AI suggesting things to users instead of waiting for us to tell it what to do.
