Sahiti Gabrani

Sahiti Gabrani, a class 12 student of Apeejay School, Noida bagged a coveted seat in Computer Science Majors in the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Sahiti shares important tips for getting into her dream college:

“There are many inspiring teachers in my school who helped me in more ways than simply enriching my basic knowledge. One teacher who has influenced me the most is Ms. Manjari Rattan. She is in charge of the ‘Interact Club’ at school. I am also part of this amazing club whose motto is ‘Service before self’. She gave us motivational speeches from time to time to be truly good at heart. She played a critical role in my all-round development.”

How ecstatic are you?

I am on cloud nine. Frankly, I was not expecting the offer!. It was my dream to get into UCLA. Besides the scholarship offered has made it a very easy decision. It’s a fantastic institution and was ranked number two in the U.S. News & World Report 2019 Top Public Schools rankings.

How to prepare for the admission?

One must focus on three critical aspects:
1. Academic scores
Students with strong academic and personal profile have a high probability of getting admission in top foreign college/institute/university. The educational institutions not only consider your performance in class 12 but also your marks in 9th, 10th and 11th. I scored over 97 percent in class X and around 90 percent in class 9th and 11th.
2. Extracurricular activities
Admission committees of colleges in UK and US look for vibrant students not those who will be holed up in their rooms for four years with their books. You need to show them that you’ve got something special to contribute to their college community, by demonstrating how you have contributed to your own school. Universities value students who do social service. It sends a message that you care about the community. My school offers a plethora of extracurricular activities. I was part of various school clubs that helped me develop my character and life skills. I was the English editor of my school magazine. I attended First Aid training programme by Indian Red Cross Society. I worked with Goonj NGO, Delhi on various initiatives. I have also been part of blood donation drives. These activities make your application stand out.
3. Ability to draft well-written essays
The essay is your chance to impress the committee with your maturity and insight. College application essay prompts are written with this goal in mind. A stellar essay can give an ordinary student the opportunity to stand out in a competitive applicant pool. Don’t write essays in rush and request your teachers to review them.

What are the factors to consider when choosing a global College?

First and foremost, you want to go to a university that has a program you’re interested in. Then there are other factors such as finances, location, accommodation, research options, placement opportunities, etc. If you know someone who has studied at the place where you are going that’s the best way to extract a variety of information.
