Simran Bawa is a final year student pursuing Bachelor of Arts with electives English, Psychology and Economics at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) in Jalandhar. In addition to her academic excellence, she is making many lives better by contributing to society. During a telephonic interview, Simran says, “It takes a great deal of knowledge and skills to mould your communication in accordance with the style of a person you are conversing with”. The Apeejay student believes in doing something for the society, and to learn more about it, she did an internship with Hamari Pahchan, a Delhi-based NGO. Read on edited excerpts to know her experience and learnings:

Why did you choose an NGO for your internship?

Previously, I had interned with firms in the corporate sector. But this is the first time I wanted to do something for society. So, I decided to enroll myself with Hamari Pahchan, a Delhi-based NGO for an internship.

How did you come to know about this NGO?

I was approached by them for a social entrepreneur internship on Internshala. That was the first time I heard about this NGO. I read about them and explored their social media profiles and after talking with their programme head, I enrolled myself for a one month internship.

What were your learnings during your internship?

It has been a great learning experience till now. I have learned the skill of public relations, time management, and most importantly, communication. One of the core tasks of this internship is raising funds. So, it takes a great deal of knowledge and skills to mould your communication in accordance with the style of the person you are conversing with.

How have the daily tasks helped you with your career development?

These daily tasks have helped me improve my soft skills. These skills will prove to be an asset for me no matter where I go or what I do. So, I owe the most critical part of my resume to this internship.

What are your plans after completing graduation?

After graduation, I’ll be pursuing post graduation in English.

Any message/ tips you would like to give your classmates?

During internships, you get the opportunity to gather new experiences. Talking about myself, I am the ViceHead girl of the college, President of Psychology Forum, core member of NSS, and I have represented my college at Youth Festival as well as other inter-college competitions. I have also won many prizes, but that has not stopped me from exploring the world outside of college premises.

As a content writer, I have worked with multiple companies. Recently, I cleared the auditions for the All India Radio programme, Yuvvaani, and I’ll be handling my own shows soon after the conclusion of my training.

Besides, writing is my muse, so I have also won many national and International level competitions in poetry and story writing. Each of these experiences is highly precious to me and forms a part of my core memory. So, what I want to say is never say no to any opportunity. Just try everything that comes your way and leave no space for regrets because you only live once.
