India has taken a significant step towards enhancing the employability and professional development of its citizens. The Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan, unveiled the SWAYAM Plus platform on February 27, 2024. It is a new educational initiative designed to bridge the gap between traditional education and the evolving needs of the workforce. This platform, developed in collaboration with industry leaders like L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO, promises to revolutionise how working professionals and students access educational resources.

Operated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, SWAYAM Plus aims to extend the reach of the classroom to include not only students but also working professionals, thereby embodying the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s vision for flexible learning opportunities. The policy advocates for a system that supports multiple entry and exit points, enabling learners to pursue education at their convenience.

Since its inception in 2017, the SWAYAM platform has been a beacon of hope for millions seeking access to quality education. With an enrolment of 72 lakh by the end of 2023, the platform’s success story is about to enter a new chapter with SWAYAM Plus. This upgrade will introduce courses tailored to industry demands, incorporating cutting-edge features like multilingual content and AI-enabled guidance to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment.

The Minister emphasised the platform’s commitment to building an ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders in the education and employment sectors. By offering high-quality certifications and courses in partnership with leading industry and academic institutions, SWAYAM Plus aims to reach learners across India, focusing on those from smaller towns and rural areas. The platform’s goal is to provide employment-focused courses that meet learner needs in various disciplines, making education more relevant and accessible to everyone.
