Guy Finley has rightly said:

“ If you want the light to come into your life,
you need to stand where it is shining”

Emotion is a complex psychological phenomenon that is a product of our perceptions. For a layman, feeling sad or low means depression. However, this is a false notion. These are the natural feelings which go away with passage of time. But, if a person feels empty or numb, for two weeks or longer, he might be experiencing this mood disorder. One may become more self critical and complain a lot.

Nearly, 70-80% of the people are suffering from it. This mental health condition is regarded as the most dangerous illness in today’s world. In severe cases, suicidal attempts are also seen. According to clinical psychologists, commonly observed symptoms are tension over small incidents, disturbance in sleeping patterns, having bad nightmares, crying without any reason, like to be isolated, having trust issues with everyone etc.

Well, scientists are trying hard to figure out the exact reasons behind depression. However, one prominent cause is decrease in the level of neurotransmitters, say serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine etc. Its detection process is a bit hard because people might just look fine on the outside, while inside, they must be struggling to cope up with their turbulent emotions. Sometimes, it may take years to ask for help.

Seeking professional guidance and having a positive talk with a psychologist can be a ray of hope for the victims. He may suggest some effective therapies and lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy food, sleeping well, meditation and so on.

Remember! Depression is a treatable illness, with will power one can deal with it and hence, regain power.
