The water level in the Yamuna River in Delhi has surged overnight, causing widespread flooding, disruption of public transport, and the implementation of emergency measures due to heavy rainfall. As of 11 am today, the water level reached 208.57 meters, exceeding the danger mark. The situation has prompted concerns and actions from the local government and authorities.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority convened a meeting, resulting in the Chief Minister’s decision to close all schools and colleges until Sunday. Government employees, except those involved in emergency services, have been advised to work from home. Private offices have also been encouraged to adopt the work-from-home option.
The flooding has disrupted traffic movement on several roads, including parts of the crucial Outer Ring Road. To alleviate the congestion, traffic has been diverted to alternative routes, but massive traffic jams persist. Commuters relying on public transport are facing additional challenges, as Metro services have also been impacted. Waterlogging on the approach road has forced the closure of the Yamuna Bank Metro station on the Blue Line. While operations on all other lines continue normally, trains are operating at reduced speeds on Metro bridges.
Further, water services in certain areas of the national capital will be disrupted as three water treatment plants have been shut down. The Chief Minister has assured citizens that efforts will be made to normalise water supply as soon as the waterlogging recedes.
As Delhi grapples with the consequences of the swollen Yamuna river, it is crucial for residents to extend their support to one another during this time of emergency. The combined efforts of the government, authorities, and citizens are vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected individuals.
