Monika Dagar from School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) , Gurugram has come out with flying colours in the annually conducted Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) entrance exam. The B Pharma final year student has achieved All India Rank 1038 with 98.34 percentile in GPAT 2023.

The 22-year-old credits her parents for their immense sacrifice as well as faculty members for all their support. Monika completed her schooling from Haryana Board. She shares, “I was a good student from the beginning and I used to secure a good position in my class every time. My teachers and parents have always supported and guided me to do well in all the exams.”

Effective planning for preparation

Monika started with her GPAT preparation in January 2022, and she also believes that creating an effective study plan is very important to crack this competitive exam. “Having a study plan will organise your learning process. You can make short notes, a few one-liners for last time revision, as we can’t revise the entire syllabus one or two days before the exam.”

For GPAT preparation, she primarily preferred the modules and study material which was provided by her coaching institute as well as referred to the notes prepared by her faculty in Apeejay Stya University. “We must focus on our college syllabus while preparing for the GPAT exam because every question is related to the pharma curriculum. Read up on pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, organic chemistry and analysis as major subjects. And others as minor,” she mentions.

Strategise to success

The main strategy followed by the topper was to make a time table for every subject. “The time table should be divided such that it gives equal time to all major and minor subjects. We should not skip anything. When I was in first year, I was completely confused about GPAT, but then I discussed it with a few of my seniors, who guided me on how to study and create a robust time table for preparation,” Monika highlights while adding, “Solving mock test is must because solving more and more questions helps one to improve his/her speed and reduces the chances of negative marking in the exam.”

Next step

When Monika was in class 10,  her brother was pursuing  D Pharma and she used to read his course books and found them interesting, especially the pharmaceutics subject. That’s when she decided to pursue her career in the pharma field. Going forward, Monika is planning to pursue a Master of Pharmacy and then do a PhD as she is passionate to learn and grow in the pharma domain. “After I complete my studies, I would like to work as a faculty.”
