CBSE makes a bold move, shapes competency-based education for classes XI and XII

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced substantial revisions to the assessment and evaluation framework for classes XI and XII, effective from the academic year 2024-25. This initiative aims to enhance the significance of competency-based questions in theoretical exams, with a focus on better preparing students for real-world applications of their knowledge.

According to the circular issued by CBSE on April 3, 2024 there will be noticeable changes in the structure of question papers for year-end assessments in these classes. The proportion of competency-focused questions, including Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, will increase significantly from 40 to 50 percent. This adjustment is in line with the principles of competency-based education outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to assess students’ proficiency in applying conceptual understanding to practical scenarios.

Conversely, the weightage assigned to constructed response questions, such as short answer questions and long answer questions, will decrease from 40 to 30 per cent. This recalibration aims to rebalance the assessment framework, emphasising critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills essential for navigating the complexities of the 21st century.

While selective-type questions, particularly MCQs, will maintain their current weightage of 20 percent, there will be an overall decrease in the contribution of constructed response questions to the final evaluation. This realignment underscores CBSE’s commitment to fostering an educational environment that prioritises holistic development and application-oriented learning.

It’s important to note that these revisions are specific to classes XI and XII, with no modifications to the exam format for classes IX and X. The circular highlights CBSE’s comprehensive approach to implementing competency-based education, with a focus on developing resources tailored to the needs of educators and learners.

In essence, CBSE’s decision to overhaul the assessment and evaluation framework for classes XI and XII reflects a paradigm shift towards competency-based education, demonstrating an understanding of the evolving educational landscape and the necessity of equipping students with skills beyond traditional rote learning.
