The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class XII Board exams began with the English exam on February 24, 2023, which was conducted for three hours. This year 16,96,770 candidates are taking the CBSE Class XII Board exams this year, according to news reports.

The English paper, which was of 80 marks, was divided into three sections: Reading, Writing skills, and Literature. According to Sapna Sondhi, PGT English, senior English faculty at Apeejay School, Pitampura, the English exam marked a “good start to the Class XII Boards.”

Analysing the paper, she said, “It was a very good paper with the right percentage of easy, average and High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions. The unseen passages were well-chosen and had competency based MCQs. All sets had the same unseen passages and literature questions.

About the Writing skills section, she explained, “They were different for each set, but all the topics were based on contemporary issues where children could express their thoughts well. Cues were given for all the writing skill questions.”

The literature questions were very well thought of, added the English teacher. “Students who would have read the chapters thoroughly and done sample papers, took their pre-Boards and solved practice papers, would have definitely fared well.

“There was only a two-marker question in Set 2, where the question was from a different poem and the reference given was from another poem. Still, our students would have understood it well. The students started well with a good English paper so I am sure they will do well in the other exams too. All the best!”
