He is studying in Class VIII at Apeejay School, Kharghar, and loves playing the keyboard, solving Rubik’s cubes, and swimming. He even took part in a national championship (Rubik’s cubes) in Delhi and stood 15th in the competition. He also enjoys taking up responsibilities, and for that, his teachers and friends appreciate his leadership qualities. Meet Shikhar Sharma.

In an impromptu interview, he shares some of the skills he developed because of music, among other things.

What drew you to the keyboard? When did you start learning it?

I started learning the keyboard about three years back. I love the touch of the keys and the melodies; it’s peaceful and exciting at the same time. Playing the keyboard helps me express my feelings through music, and it always makes me feel happy and relaxed.

What skills do you think you’ve developed because of playing the keyboard?

Playing the keyboard has made me more patient and focused since it requires a lot of practice. It has also helped me become more creative because I enjoy experimenting with new tunes in my own style.

How does your school support your interest in music?

My school is very supportive. I often get opportunities to perform during assemblies and school events. My music teacher constantly guides and motivates me to improve my skills. My friends also encourage me by recommending songs that I should try playing, which helps me get better.

Is there a particular song or composition that you love to play the most?

Yes, I love playing Cornfield Chase from the movie Interstellar. It sounds beautiful, and even though I can’t play it as perfectly as in the movie, I feel very satisfied every time I play it.

Before a performance or competition, do you have a routine you follow?

I make sure to practice a little every day. I focus on the tricky parts and keep repeating them until I get them right. I also try to stay calm and imagine myself playing well.

How do your parents support your musical journey?

My parents have always been very supportive. Although I’m self-taught, they constantly encourage me to learn more. They even bought me a new piano for a competition I was preparing for, and they are always on the lookout for good classes to help me improve.
