He is currently in Class IX at Apeejay School, Kharghar, and is extremely passionate about music; he enjoys learning and playing different types of musical instruments. His other hobby is playing football. Meet Shaurya Shendge. In a candid interview, he shares his musical journey and how he got interested in playing the keyboard.
What inspired you to start playing the keyboard, and how long have you been learning it?
I got inspired to play the keyboard at a very young age when I saw a differently-abled child play it for the first time. Also, I discovered my ability to appreciate any type of music and a spark to perform it at the age of 10.
Do you prefer playing classical pieces? Why?
I am especially fond of classical music. It is because I feel that emotions can best be expressed through classical music. I also find it fascinating that pieces of music, which are hundreds of years old, can still be relevant and entertaining.
How do you balance music with schoolwork?
I believe the key to balancing many activities is avoiding stress and staying consistent. Even if it’s just for a short time, I ensure that I practise music daily on any instrument, not just the keyboard.
How does it feel to perform in front of an audience?
At first, it was extremely nerve-racking for me to perform on stages. But now, thanks to the opportunities given to me by school, I have overcome my stage fright and feel confident performing on stages.
Is there a particular song or piece you love playing the most?
It’s the act of making music that I love, more than any specific piece! I can’t choose a particular piece or song as my favourite thing to play. I love listening to and playing all genres of music, like Bollywood, classical, pop, rock, and jazz. Shreya Ghoshal inspires me most. I admire her journey and hope to reach that level someday.
What is the most challenging lesson you’ve learnt, and how did you tackle it?
It has to be the Turkish March by Mozart. I tackled it by spending hours and hours practising the song and being somewhat able to play it. I also try to create my music with the help of the knowledge of classical ragas that I have.
How is the school supporting your musical journey?
My school and teachers have played a big role in my musical journey. I truly admire how music teachers nurture students with this talent and help them grow. I’m grateful to my mentors for shaping me into a better person.
