Hailing from Delhi, Neil is in the first year of BBA (Honours) Marketing. His mother, Anita Singh, is Senior Assistant in North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) while her sister, Katyayni Singh, runs a production house. In an off-the-cuff chat, the 18-year-old explains what made him pick India’s first Liberal Arts University, the importance of internships, why he thinks one can build a promising career in Marketing, and more. Edited excerpts:

What made you pick ASU?

I am an alumnus of Apeejay School – Panchsheel Park, so I always had an inclination for ASU. However, I was confused as to whether to opt for BBA (Honours) in Human Resources or BBA (Honours) in Marketing. I am glad that during the counselling session, Dr. Sunil Kumar Roy, Dean at SOMS, had a healthy interaction with me and after understating my personality and interests he suggested that I am tailor-made for Marketing. I believe one needs to choose a perfect career path with the right career guidance.

What are your expectations from ASU?

One of the USPs of ASU is that it offers paid internships from the first-year itself. I believe bookish knowledge must be complemented with hands-on experience. Internships are critical to ensure that students get exposure to the industrial environment, latest technology trends and opportunities to learn and sharpen their technical and managerial skills. They also provide students with the soft skills needed in the workplace and in leadership positions. Importantly, it builds your resume. If you are one of the finalists for a position and you have internship experience but the other finalist hasn’t, then the chances of you landing a job increases considerably. What I also like about ASU is that it pays attention to little things such as ‘How to write a resume for a Job’. It’s important to mention the right skills for the job and not bore the HR manager with irrelevant information.

According to you, what makes marketing a great career option?

It’s an evergreen field and there’s a huge global demand for marketers. Marketing is used in every industry, so career potential is unlimited. The success of a business relies on how well you market your product or service. Marketing is what brings consumers and products together. It spans across all aspects of the business, and across all customer contact points. Marketing is the perfect industry for you if you have good creative, communication and analytical skills. There are great career opportunities in a number of interesting areas such as FMCG, Consumer Durables, Advertising, Media, Sales & Distribution, Retail Marketing and more.

What are your future plans?

Right now my focus is to accumulate as much knowledge as possible and through my achievements inspire others to pursue a career in marketing. Also, as I have stated earlier, my sister runs a production house so it would be great if I can use my skills to help grow her business.
