‘Addiction: A friend or foe?’: Poem by Dhruvika Jain, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar

In the depths of shadows, I find my retreat,
Bound to the chains that make my heart beat,
Addiction, a relentless and cruel foe,
A haunting specter that won’t let me go.
At first, it whispered promises of bliss,
A temporary solace, an addictive kiss,
But little did I know, it would soon devour,
Every ounce of strength, every ounce of power.
Like a thief in the night, it stole my soul,
Leaving me empty, losing all control,
Every wakeful moment consumed by its grip,
Torn between cravings, on this sinking ship.
It lured me with false dreams of escape,
A temporary refuge from torment and ache,
But oh, how swiftly those pleasures fade,
Leaving me trapped, lost in its charade.
Friends turned strangers, family in despair,
As addiction weaves its wicked snare,
I’m drowning beneath its suffocating weight,
Struggling to rise, but it seals my fate.
Days blend together in a hazy blur,
A constant battle, a relentless infer,
Each morning brings a new cycle of pain,
As addiction tightens its venomous chain.
But amidst this darkness, a flicker of light,
A glimmer of hope within the endless night,
For deep within me, a strength slowly grows,
A desire for freedom, to break addiction’s hold.
With courage as my armor, I face the fight,
Knowing the road to recovery is bright,
Seeking support, finding strength in a crowd
Together we’ll conquer, we’ll silence addiction’s shroud.
For in the depths of our souls, a fire will ignite,
Burning away the darkness, shining so bright,
For addiction may linger, but we won’t let it win
With love, support, and perseverance, we’ll begin.
So let us stand united, hand in hand,
Defying the grip of addiction’s demand
Together we’ll rise, we’ll find our way
Reclaiming our lives, breaking free from the sway.
