Recently, Apeejay School, Pitampura, organised engaging learning sessions for the students of its Astronomy Club, covering two interesting modules that combined astronomy, photography, mathematics, and practical experimentation. The sessions encouraged students to move beyond theoretical concepts and explore scientific principles through hands-on activities.
Module 1: Cosmic Click – Understanding DSLR Photography
The first module, titled Cosmic Click: Learned About the Working of a DSLR Camera, introduced students to the construction and functioning of a DSLR camera. The session helped them understand the basic principles of photography and the various factors that influence the quality of an image.
Students explored the role of different types of lighting and learnt how to use a DSLR effectively for low-light photography. They were introduced to key camera settings, including lens length, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure, and understood how these elements work together to create a well-balanced photograph.


As part of the practical activity, students were encouraged to operate the camera in manual mode and experiment with different settings to determine the ideal combination for capturing an image. This gave them an opportunity to understand photography as both a technical skill and a creative process.
The students particularly enjoyed experimenting with creative photography techniques such as light painting and ghost photography, making the session interactive and enjoyable.
Module 2: Time, Sundials & Creating a Sundial
The second module focused on the fascinating relationship between the Sun, time, Mathematics, and astronomy. Students learnt to distinguish between local time and Indian Standard Time (IST) and explored how a sundial can be used to determine the local time of Delhi.
They also learnt how IST can be calculated using local time and were introduced to the basics of the equation of time. The session further explored the working of sundials and their historical significance in the development of timekeeping, while highlighting their connection with mathematics and astronomy.







To reinforce their understanding, students created their own sundials using simple materials and used them to observe and determine time. The hands-on activity enabled them to apply scientific concepts practically and appreciate how ancient methods of timekeeping were based on observations of the natural world.
The sessions provided students with an enriching learning experience, fostering curiosity, experimentation, and a deeper appreciation of astronomy and its interdisciplinary connections.
