He is a student of Class XI at Apeejay School, Saket, and is interested in space, technology, and especially physics and chemistry. These subjects really fascinate him. He also enjoys reading, and in his free time, he likes to jot down his thoughts on paper, just for fun, as a habit. Meet Shivansh Kumar, the recipient of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.
In an impromptu interview, the PCM student, who plans to pursue engineering, talks about why human values are important.
What inspired you to follow the path of human values?
I once went through a situation where I was stuck and had no one to count on. That experience made me realise how important it is to be kind and supportive. I once came across a quote that said, ‘You don’t have to be the bad guy, even if life made you like one’. It stayed with me. No matter what happens, I choose to be good to others and make a difference through compassion.
A situation where you demonstrated compassion or courage that made a difference?
I remember a time in Class VII or VIII, during our mid-term results. My best friend didn’t perform as well as he expected and was very upset. Seeing him cry really affected me. I went up to him, consoled him, and helped him prepare for the next exam. He did much better in the following test, and that made me genuinely happy.

How do you balance your academic goals with the practice of human values?
Academics are important to me, but I believe learning isn’t just about marks; it’s about character. There’s no point in getting good grades if one doesn’t have a good character or integrity. I try to avoid shortcuts and always help others whenever I can.
Why is it important to inculcate human values at the school level?
Values like respect, honesty, and empathy make school a safe and supportive place for everyone. When students show respect and kindness toward each other, the environment becomes more motivating and enjoyable. If students respect teachers and help one another, learning becomes not only meaningful but also deeply fulfilling.
What role have your school and parents played in helping you imbibe these moral values?
My father always tells me, no matter what happens, be the good guy and be the best version of yourself. My teachers have also guided me in the same way, reminding me to stay true to myself and help others.
How do you plan to carry human values forward?
Values should never be left behind in school; they guide every decision in life. As I move forward, I’ll make sure to stay honest in my work and stand up for what’s right, even if I find myself in a toxic or competitive work environment. I want to be the person who upholds integrity and compassion, no matter the circumstances.
