Playing the guitar began as a simple hobby but quickly turned into a powerful journey of self-expression, confidence, and growth. Inspired by performances, mentors, and personal experiences, I’ve embraced music as a deeply rewarding passion. Meet — Arush Walia — a Class XII-B at Apeejay School, Saket, from the PCM stream.

In a candid interview, the young guitarist who began learning in the summer of 2022 says that he was inspired by songs like Bekhayali, and the passion for the instrument has helped him through tough times and shaped who I am today.

What inspired you to join the school orchestra as a pianist, and how has that shaped your growth as a musician?

I started playing the guitar as a hobby when my cousin lent me hers. I wanted to learn how to make songs and try something new. Once I got the basics, I performed on stage during the 2022 Annual Day at the school. That performance went well, and as I began watching music content online, I got hooked. Since then, I’ve stuck with it, and that consistency has led to growth.

Can you recall a specific rehearsal or performance that impacted you?

There was no single performance that changed everything — it was gradual. Each time I went on stage, I gained more confidence. I used to be very shy and found it hard to talk to people. But through music, I started to come out of my shell. With every performance, I became surer of myself, and now I can speak openly and confidently.

Are there any specific composers or pieces that resonate with your taste in music?

I performed Aadat by Atif Aslam and Chahun Main Ya Na by Arijit Singh with two or three friends during the 2024 MUN — not as part of the full orchestra, just a small group performance.

In what ways has your understanding of the guitar evolved?

My guitar knowledge keeps expanding. I’m now exploring advanced techniques like percussive playing and feel much more at ease with the instrument. As I grow, I’ve started adding my style and ideas into my playing, which makes it more personal and fulfilling.

Do you notice any similarities between guitar playing and your approach to problem-solving?

Rhythm and problem-solving are similar — both bring order and structure. Playing the guitar improves quick thinking and coordination, sharpening mental agility. This helps me think more clearly and solve problems more effectively in my general life, too.

Has playing in the orchestra influenced how you express emotions?

The guitar helps me express emotions. When I’m upset, playing calms me down — it’s therapeutic. Sometimes I play, other times I just listen to music to clear my mind. I’m thankful to our music teacher and Principal sir for their support. They’ve helped me grow by guiding me.
