March has arrived, bringing with it the perfect reason to enjoy some of nature’s tastiest and healthiest fruits — berries and cherries. This month is dedicated to these little powerhouses of nutrition, reminding us to add them to our daily diet. Berries and cherries are more than just delicious — they are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre that can boost overall health. Whether eaten fresh, blended into smoothies, or used in desserts, these fruits offer a delightful mix of flavour and wellness.
Significance of the month
The idea behind Berries and Cherries Month is simple: To encourage people to eat more of these nutritious fruits. With their rich colour, juicy texture, and sweet-tart taste, they are loved by all. In India, cherries are grown in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, while strawberries and other berries are cultivated in states like Maharashtra, Meghalaya, and Uttarakhand. As people become more health-conscious, these super-fruits are gaining popularity across the country.
According to Dr Monika Anand, Head, Department of Home Science, Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar, berries and cherries are nutritional powerhouses that offer a perfect balance of taste and health benefits. “Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre, they support overall well-being, from boosting immunity to improving heart health. Including these fruits in your daily diet is a simple yet effective step towards a healthier lifestyle,” the Professor shared.
