Captain Poonam Doel is serving in the Indian Army as a Nursing Officer in the Military Nursing Service. She was commissioned in 2020 and has completed five years of service. In a candid interview, she shares many inspirational words, gives insights into her career choices and reminds students that opting for studies abroad is not the only way to make it big in life. Edited excerpts:

Captain! What made you choose the army? Does it run in the family?

Yes, it does! My grandfather retired as a Major in the Indian Army, and my aunt also served in the same profession, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Now, I am continuing this legacy, currently holding the rank of Captain. In two to three years, I will be promoted to Major.

That’s wonderful, and we wish you all the best for it! Despite the phenomenal progress,  you must have observed there are still stereotypes about women joining the armed forces. Did you face any challenges? What’s your advice for aspiring women?

The scenario has improved significantly. When I started my training in 2016, opportunities were limited, especially for women. But now, with the NDA allowing female candidates and the Agniveer scheme, more girls are joining the forces. It’s a great opportunity for those passionate about serving the nation.

Personally, I didn’t face much prejudice, especially within the armed forces, as the environment is very professional. However, during my training, I did encounter surprise from civilians who were unaware that women serve in the military as doctors. That perception has changed now, thanks to greater awareness and representation.

So what sparked your interest in medicine?

I always loved biology! Unlike physics or chemistry, which never interested me as much, I had a natural curiosity for biology. That made me realise that medicine was the right path for me.

Tell us about your school days at Apeejay, Rama Mandi. Was it during school that you decided on this career path?

I spent most of my academic life at Apeejay, from Class 1 to Class 12. The school played a huge role in shaping me, both academically and in extracurricular activities. I was honoured to receive the Dr. Stya Paul Award in Class 10 and was actively involved in investiture ceremonies. In fact, I served as the Head Girl of the school.

Apeejay School, Rama Mandi always encouraged me to excel. The teachers believed in my potential and I am grateful to them. Even today, whenever I pass by my school, I feel nostalgic. Unfortunately, due to my service commitments, I haven’t had the opportunity to visit my teachers, but I remain deeply thankful.

That’s amazing! Were you involved in any co-curricular activities at school?

Yes, I was part of the basketball team until Class 10. I actively participated in singing, dance, rangoli-making, debates, and other activities. Looking back, I feel that the school nurtured all of these talents in me.

What advice would you like to give to current Apeejay students?

I would encourage students to explore opportunities in India before considering moving abroad. Lately, I’ve observed that many students are opting to go to Canada, including from my younger brother’s batch. While studying abroad is great, I believe there are excellent opportunities within India too. Students should recognise their potential and explore career options here as well.
